the difference lies in its marketing. Nobody releases EP's expecting a huge popular turnout and to sell a bunch of records. They do it as a teaser for an upcoming album, usually attaching singles from the upcoming album. It's generally shorter, has less tracks, and was not slaved on for the amount of time a whole album is. Of course there are exceptions to this rule, but just because the rules are only trends doesn't mean an EP and an album are the same. They are still very different
