It's kooky! and fun! yet spooky, and dumb.
Once the spasms subside, though, there remains only one song, seeming to come straight out of an asylum (and it is multiplied by a thousand echoes from that asylum’s cells). In this tortured section of the song, loud, squeaking voice recordings are launched at crazy speeds, and they are punctuated by horrendous music hall piano and interrupted and overtaken by fragments from a tape-grinding organ. After a short interlude of silence, the finish is soft, magical and delirious. The overwhelming masterpiece ends with two alternating voices relaying a medieval fairytale over a subtle guitar. This fairytale, and one verse in particular, sums up Faust’s entire, complex philosophy, dealt with throughout the album: “Are we supposed to be or not to be.” With this closing song, Faust had managed to blend the grotesque, the everyday, and the transcendent into a colossal contradiction, a catastrophic imbalance, which serves as a summation of the human condition that in a way is more accurate than any rational discourse.

Bunch of guys were billed to be the Beatles of Germany. That's what the label wanted. Instead, locked in a little house in the country, that completely rejected the last 20 years of rock and blues to create that.
This is really one of the only rock albums I've listened to that had my jaw dropped in amazement.
I had no idea that something like that could be rock when I first listened to it.
From which point of view are we to explain it ?
It's super poseury but good.
Like, it's annoying in some parts but I can appreciate it for what it is.
I like the tape music parts

You're a joke.
There is really nothing to explain. IMO it's one of the best albums of all time, and the way the did the sound collages was the GOAT, and one of the few truly experimental albums that exist. If you don't like it, listen to it again

Welcome to /mu/, please enjoy your stay.
Why don't you eat carrots?
in the single night Faust was recorded, the creativity and intellectual freedom that the group had been realizing exploded into full blown Enlightenment and exponentiated into nothing short of a revolutionary act. upon achieving absolute artistic freedom, what happened that night matches its jouissance with existential terror--reflecting the inherent confusion of mankind. it crafts its own musical language and immediately progresses it to its logical conclusion: destruction. it is quite literally rational ecstasy. it is the ego death not of a single artist, but of mankind, music itself, art itself, language itself. it's no longer "rock" because it's no longer just music. it is everything: its conclusion could easily work as the conclusion for all of human existence.
if you don't appreciate Faust you have fundamentally failed not only as an appreciator of art, but as a human being, because Faust is one of the peaks (if not THE peak) of human creativity in the past century.
