Explain ambient.
"Music" poseurs pretend to enjoy
Ambient one of the few genres that doesn't need explaining, it's pretty straight forward. It's like how some people enjoy ambient background noise from nature, etc but in a musical form

nice bum :D :D

So you're not supposed to actively listen to it? Just put it on the background while you do other shit?

The majority of ambient music is structured in an unobstructed way, so I would say yes.
if you're into it, it's like an entire universe of sound. lots of depth. if you're not, it just gets boring. i love it

I think Brian Eno sums it greatly:
>Ambient music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting.

It's supposed to be able to function in the foreground and in the background

Funny and way too true

pretty much yeah. Ambient is great for atmosphere or getting into a certain mood.
It's not clever music, doesnt take much skill other than being able to construct a mellow 4 chord progression and tweaking some absynth and ohmisphere soundscape and pad presets.
There isnt really much to say.

not true btw
people like Tim Hecker or Ben Frost put hundreds of hours into their albums and it shows. But one could argue their stuff is too demanding to be truly ambient in vanilla sense. Still its probably the best label for most of their output.
i think, for me, it often has to do with the appreciation of raw sound. it takes a lot of focus, but it can be really rewarding.

That's it

It really depends on the ambient. William Basinski spent 2 years making his newest album, Cascade, even though it sounds very simplistic. It's all about texture.
