A short but sweet uptempo minimal techno track I made today, heavily inspired by the album Paradise by Robert Hood. I'm very satisfied with it. Very bass-heavy.

Question regarding production for hip hop/rap. Am I better to compress the instrumental a fuckton behind the lyrics or use shit like doubling etc to push the vocals through?

>>
>>64330292
I was the last OP, I copied the pastebin from the wiki didn't realise there was an updated version sorry anon
>>
>>64335037
Compression makes sound more present (given that you make-up gain). You'd be better of compressing the vocals + make-up gain.

Parallel compression can work great.

Also, you can carve a little space in the background instruments with EQ. E.g. if your vocal is present around 1k then apply -3db cut to the instrumental around those frequencies to carve space for the vocals.

You can also try having the vocal eat for example the background pads with sidechain compression so that whenever the vocal is on, the pads subtly decrease in volume so they don't overpower it.

Also, of course, a +1.5db - 3db high shelf on the vocals from ~8k will help place it in the front.

Hey prod.
I have trouble making begginings and endings for my tracks. Usually I put in loops, sounds etc, when I have what I like it looks like the middle of the track and the dillemma of creating other parts for the track comes in.

What do? I tried creating an intro here, the second part of the track is what is started with.

Make the different sounds blend together better by EQing more, the keyboard melody should be quieter in a lot of places

also if anyone wants give advice on this that would be superb

kinda boring imo, also disliked the melody coming in 1:00, esp. the off key note
>>
>>64338670
you could watch videos to get the basic idea and a few tips, but i think actually doing it is the best way to get into it. there aren't a lot of really concrete rules to go by anyways
>>
>>64338670
>how do i get into this type of thing?

I find the easiest way is to buy a hardware sampler, (you can get a decent EMU or Akai for under £50 on eBay) plug a synth into it or record a soft synth or audio out of your DAW use the onboard processing, editing or effects from your sampler, send that back into your daw, cut up the audio add effects etc repeat to infinity.

https://youtu.be/APYVz6x5l2I

Check 1:38
>>
>>64338982
>the easiest way is to buy a hardware sampler
i would think the easiest way would just be to use the daw's sampler or a vst, you dont really need a hardware sampler just to start getting into resampling (although i'm not one of those people that's totally opposed to hardware samplers just because software ones exist and are technically more capable)
>>
>>64339047
Sorry I was going to add that to what I wrote. Of course you can use the sampler in your DAW or just bouncing down the track would be the easiest way.

HELP
I want to be able to add midi overdubs to a mp3 file on flstudio.
how to do i put the audio file in there and then put the synths and stuff over it ? does that make sense? really need help
>>
I don't know much about sculpting my bass tone but i've heard the following tone in a couple places such as:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sy1dYFGkPUE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsDwItoNlLc&list=PLE8tqyHyqu3y0gcLZoup8yvRp9jCjJq0q&index=4
Any tips/ideas on how to achieve something relatively close to this?
>>
>>64339209
You should be able to drag the mp3 into flstudio (unless its encoded for copyright protection in which case just download it off youtube and use that one)
Once its in your program you've got to figure out what tempo it is and as long as it has a steady non-changing tempo you should just be able to line its beats up and your midi notes should be on beat. Hope that helped.
>>
>>64334419
I don't get the "REAPER/FL Studio a shit" meme.

If you actually fuck with the scripting, shortcuts, and SWS, REAPER can be a great DAW. It's MIDI tracking fucking sucks but it's really not the focus.

FL Studio has a great workflow, polished interface, solid stock plugins, etc. Do people not like it because it isn't hard enough to get in to or some bottle service shit like that? I'm genuinely curious.
>>
>>64339266
yes that mostly helped but where do i drag it out and how can i find out what the tempo is?

got redirected to here: can any of you tell me how to achieve these bassy tearing/ripping type noises that M.E.S.H. has in music, eg at 0:17 in the link below? shit slaps

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-GUSPEjMK4
>>
>>64339429
Im not sure what you mean by drag it out but you can figure out the tempo in several ways; first, i've never used flstudio but it might have a bpm detector, however that isn't always reliable so you could also use this website;
http://www.all8.com/tools/bpm.htm
and hit space bar to the beat of the song and it should get you close, if its not perfect you can just slow it down or speed it up by a couple bpm
>>
>>64339445
I used to do it a lot in my DAW by stacking lots of effects on a sound until it sounded different, bounce that track to audio, you can then use the audio editor to shape the envelope of the sound, use a lot of EQing and add more effects, bounce to audio again, soon you will have lots of totally new sounds.

The possibilities are endless, pitch the sound up and down, stretch the fuck out of it, drown it in reverb, add Delays then sample just the repeats of the delay...
This is pretty much all I used to do in my DAW
>>
bump, somebody please answer >>64339611
>>
>>64339611
assuming you use ableton (but this should apply to most shit) i got something similar by doing this

any synth, basic saw (experiment w/ other waveforms maybe), 0 sustain and REALLY fast decay so its basically just a click but a lil bit of tone comes through, played in a low octave

put arpeggiator on that, turn off sync so its miliseconds instead of beats. set gate to 100, start with really fast rate like 15-20ms, and automate it so it slows down to like 200ms or slower. fuck with the rate and gate to get some different shit

next put a filter/EQ on it, sweep with a bandpass from low frequency to higher at the same time as the arpeg automation. fuck with the frequency range so it sounds cool
>>
>>64339903
actually on the bandpass sweep the automation should linger on the lower frequencies then quickly sweep up to the higher ones avoiding the mids, to sound like what ur going for
>>
>>64339903
>>64339969
fuck ACTUALLY it should start in the mids kind of then go down then back up quickly. idk youre probably not dumb just make it sound like the shit

also fuck with reverb and saturation etc
>>
>>64339903
>>64339969
>>64340002
thanks, gr8 1! you could use this technique on a lot of different source material to get cool sounds too, technically speaking; you could even emulate it in granular synthesis or something like that i think? i hadn't thought about doing it the way you described so cheers for setting me up
>>
>>64340095

hello lads

i'm working on this tune for introing my grime sets

general question:

how do I generally open the mix up, it feels like the strings and synths are all competing with one another for sound.

specific question:
how do i de-fuck the flute section that comes in around mid-way? it clips to fuck during the complex melody, but then more or less falls silent when i break it down into a more simple flute layer. how do i make the complex part less obnoxious and make the subtler part stand out more? i've tried all sorts of different compression and eqing but nothing it working.

all general feedback welcome
