jadd has the edge as far as purity goes for sure and as a result it's compelling as a refreshing trip in much the same way as some of the more pastoral van gogh paintings, but I find that to only be half the puzzle (though maintaining purity is probably the most difficult artistic feat to achieve) as far as great music goes which is why I said I find it a bit trivial. the problem is not unique to her or that album though, folk tends to suffer from the not doing much with the world they transport you to issue as a whole

It's funny you say that, I've always called Just Another Diamond Day a work of modern Impressionism, maybe not in the sense of the same musicality of the Impressionism of the late 19th century, but sort of in the sense of heavy conveying of emotion and tone. Out of all the music I've listened to it has had the most significant emotional impact, one of the only records that's ever made me cry, and it doesn't even hold any personal significance to me. It's like you really come to know Vashti and the life she describes through listening. I can understand though, the things she is trying to communicate do sort of come off the wall and have little to do with each other besides fitting under a loose theme. Still one of my favorite albums of all time, though

I mentioned van gogh for two reasons mainly, one being that his paintings have a very odd effect in that while they are stylized and not at all realistic they carry the exact feeling you would get being at real-life equivalents of the scenes in person, they are very, strangely transporting, moreso than they would be if they were photorealistic, and the second being the intimacy and emotional undercurrent the, I don't want to say mental illness, so outsider's perspective brings to it. in any case it's leagues better than neofolk so gj

Neofolk is basically talentless singer-songwriters playing third rate songs with an untuned guitar, but it can sometimes be good. The average neofolker is an idiot, though. These are all real life examples:
