Old thread to post prog in hit bump limit, so might as well start up another thread.

Post favorite albums, discuss them, get into arguments, etc.

Do you guys like this? Had it on my harddrive for at least 5 years and never listened to it until now lol.
>>
>>64309479
It does sound a lot like KC's Red, minus the mellotron. I wonder if the term 'post-rock' was never coined if people would just look at those bands as an extension of the prog mindset,
>>
>>64309479
It's not even remotely prog other than the accidental KC similarities. Everything about it is post-rock.
>>
Has any decent prog come out this year?
>>
>>64309540
Not yet to my knowledge. If we're lucky Magma might drop something as might Univers zero but so far nothing very noteworthy

Pic related. /mu/ doesn't like SW, but it's a great mini album. I am a fanboy, though, There was a new Ulver album as well, and Ihsahn if you count metal.

New Virus and Kayo Dot soon.

Steven Wilson's 4 1/2 EP was pretty ok, and while not really anything new save for a couple tracks, Big Big Train's new live album (From Stone and Steel) is nice to keep you until Folklore comes out.
>>
>>64309563
Damn, new Kayo Dot coming out? Ought to look out for that

Never really paid attention to Wilson but I like his remastering work. How are his albums?
>>
>>64309582
They are okay.

Seeing as how you like King Crimson so much, check out pic related. Wilson dosen't really hide his boner for them on this record, and Alan Parsons helped produce it too.
>>
>>64309597
I won't deny its definitely one of his weaker works, but Book of Regrets and the new version of Don't Hate Me are nice.
>>
>>64309582
Raven is fucking amazing if you like 70s prog. HCE was very 'straight' for lack of a better word, More of a pop album, but it had its moments and a moving story behind it Insurgentes is very good, like a mix of shoegaze, post-punk and King Crimson. Grace for Drowning is great as well.

Definitely worth listening through the Porcupine Tree discography as well. I could listen to his albums just for the production. His work with Opeth and classic prog remasters are ridiculous.

>>64309582
Yeah. By the sounds of it, it will be an extension of Coffins on Io (i.e. more darkwave than prog). Driver has never made a bad album, though.
>>
>>64309627
Damn, alright. Which era of KC is it comparable to?

[spoiler]If it's the Wetton era I'm gonna cum[/notreallyaspoiler]
>>
>>64309682
>tfw I replied to the same comment twice
>>
>>64309682
Yeah definitely gonna listen to Raven. Insurgentes sounds interesting, if Raven catches my eye I'll give it a listen

Ok, I have In Absentia in my backlog. I'll give it a listen.
His remasters for KC and Yes were absolutely fucking genius and one of the main reasons I liked Blackwater Park was the literally perfectionist production.
>>
>>64309683
I'll just level with you and say the only Wetton era record i've listened to is Red, but it does have that heavier sound Red is known for throughout, alongside some jazzier influences here and there.
>>
>>64309728
Cool. The thing about PT is that they had three quite distinct eras. They started off making Pink Floyd style space rock, then a couple of pop rock albums and then progressive metal (kinda) which is the era In Absentia is from. Came out around the same time as Blackwater Park.

He has a band with Mikael from Opeth called Storm Corrosion as well, which is to Comus what Raven is to King Crimson, if that makes sense.

Very overlooked
>>
>>64309782
Sounds like some cool shit.

You really should listen to the other two Wetton albums. They're more avant-proggish and slightly less aggressive but they're just as complex, mindblowing and if you're big on free improv you'll enjoy them even more than Red.

>>64309808
That sounds cool. As long as it's not Meme Theater style prog metal I should enjoy it.
>>
>>64309848
None of Steven Wilson's project is DT styl wankery, most of it is quite accessible

He also has pop rock project Blackfield with israeli guy, but only their first 2 albums are good
And No-Man with Tim Bownes is also pretty good if you like dream pop and trip hop

W E W
BASED WILSON

But yeah DT are pretty awful, they're one of the reasons I stay far far away from most prog metal.

He seems to be involved in an awful lot of projects. What would some of his most experimental work be, in your opinion?
>>
>>64309930
I remember when he made a diss about Neal Morse saying his music isn't progressive at all
>>
>>64310000
congrats
>>
>>64310000
IEM which has krautrock influence
He also has ambient project Bass Communion
>>
>>64310000
He has I.E.M. which is his krautrock/psych side project. I'd say that and the psychedelic/space rock Porcupine Tree days are the most 'experimental' along with Storm Corrosion. And his first two solo albums just for the genres they bring together. Oh, and Bass Communion. I haven't listened to much, but it's an ambient/drone side project so I guess that'd top the list.

But I consider him to be more of a perfectionist than an experimental artist. Most of his main albums are quite straightforward, but composed and produced in a very detailed way.

>incredible expanding mindfuck
10/10 name desu
Might listen to it just for that alone

But yeah he seems like a really interesting person and I should start exploring some of his music
>>
>>64309930
I didn't find much beyond him saying he just plainly didn't like DT but respected the individual artists, found this though

>“I feel that progressive metal is, right now, one of the most overused musical vocabularies there is. There are too many progressive metal bands. There doesn’t seem to be a week that goes by without another 10 groups coming along.”

>>
>>64310432
i found some pink floyd clone called huxley would approve but it doesn't really do anything new. iluvatar's newest album is really growing on me but most people wouldn't like it. i've been getting into darryl way but most of his solo stuff is just wanky canterbury prog

>>
>>64310669
I refused to listen to Gazpacho for the longest time because of you, but Night is great

>>64310867
If you want a fast-track into GY!BE just listen to Mladic (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXdF9uhVrI0). But the first two albums and EP are essentials.

>>64310357
Well, I definitely remember him featuring on a Dream Theater song as an apology. Maybe it was just that. I think the assertion is that they are awful songwriters but technically great musicians.
>>
>>64311002
check out tick tock and demon next if you liked night

Yeah, even I hate them and I admit that they are incredibly technically skilled. They just don't put it to good use

If you haven't listened to The Mars Volta, you need to do that immediately. One of the only bands to take the spirit of the 70s without doing it in a revivalist way.

gazpacho, steven wilson, mystery, echolyn, airbag, chroma key, osi, devin townsend, diagonal, dredg, freedom to glide, hrsta, iluvatar. and if you want to dip into prog folk theres punch brothers and joanna newsom. i'd even go as far as to call divers an actual prog rock album.
