I don't think PW was terrible but I do think it was very disappointing. The instrumentation was simple, and not in a minimalist, affecting way -- more in an undeveloped and sometimes annoying way, like on summoning the wretch. the songs were often directionless and too short, even by pop AnCo standards. usually they build something out of their repetitive hooks, some sort of climax but half of the songs repeat 2 or 3 ideas a couple times and just end. some of the lyrics are a little corny and observational, which isn't necessarily bad but it's certainly not as emotionally resonant or IMO even as quirky or fun as their other records. golden gal is a BIG exception though, that song sidesteps every complaint i have

I definitely think there are tons of great songs made by minorities in just that year. Pitchfork has never really appreciated jazz in the first place through reviews, so I'm not sure they even reviewed enough albums to know about more than 8 great songs by minorities in that year.

For the most part, yes. There's vocal talent as well, but I don't see it as very important in the end (especially for an artist with a not-so unique voice, regardless of range).
Intrumental profieciency (electronic production included) still reign supreme. An artist like Brian Wilson is an example of an actually significant musician, while on the other hand you won't see me call Mike Love a great musician despite the fact that he has a superior vocal range to Beyonce and actually knows how to play an instrument.

The seeds don't define the hip hop scene, they evolved into it, just like every genre. I think in the 80's and early 90's hip hop was very promising, but now its homogenized into some slop. Any variety that a person talks about in hip hop is so incredibly slight. It usually just refers to lyrical themes, or styles.
Are you trying to argue that Hip Hop doesn't borrow from other genres in order to move forward, because it so does. EDM, blues, soul, r&b, jazz, whatever. It's evolution is happening in the same way Rock's did/is, and is somehow coming out of it all with even less variety
