>laugh at /mu/ for being disgusting hipsters
>decide to ironically listen to this meme album expecting it to be ridiculous garbage
>it's the best thing album I've ever heard in my life
I'll never doubt you faggots again please show me more good stuff like this.
>>64295224
When you listen again unironically, if that's at all possible, you will realise it really is shit.

>>64296092
A few other common albums here:
The Doors
The Velvet Underground
American Football
(all self-titled)
>>64296092
thanks senpai. i'll lurk some more
>>64296175
Yep, these too. Wouldn't recommend Velvet Underground to a newfag though. They won't make it through side b.
Don't forget
In the Court of the Crimson King
Meriweather Post Pavillion
Loveless
Radiohead- Ok Computer and Kid A
>>64296092
these 3 are dank as fuck
>>64296183
Start with the Glow. Its very similar to ITAOTS.
ps if you want a quick way to gain more experience in albums, theres weekly group album listenalongs on sundays at 4pm eastern standard time. pretty easy way to see what people are listening to.
>>64295398

trips speak the truth of truths
anyway, sup OP. I've always thought of Aeroplane as part of a trilogy of 1999-core that really sets you up for everywhere rock and pop music has gone since. so now that you've listened to Aeroplane, listen to
>The Soft Bulletin by The Flaming Lips
and
>The Unauthorized Autobiography of Reinhold Messner by Ben Folds Five (pic related)
they all came out of a similar atmosphere and have a lot in common, though each one is also radically different. You listen to them, and then you've got a solid foundation to continue exploring modern music in whatever direction you choose.
and yeah stay the hell away from /mu/ until you know enough to not get sucked into the memery, otherwise you lose your sense of taste and eventually forget what "liking an album" means.
>>64296592
the other album just for good measure
>>64296592
swap bff for the dismemberment plan and you're right
>>64296592
you realize itaots wasn't released in 1999 right
it was in 1998
and what the fuck is with the bff album? you realize thats the shit one, right
Pic related is the best /mu/core album
>>64296718
i'm not going for /mu/core so much. the thing about these three bands--NMH, the Lips, and BFF--is they all end up becoming absolute superstar heavyweights of rock and alt-rock that deeply influenced the current generation of musicians. Dismemberment Plan kicks ass (OP should totally listen to it if he hasn't!) but i don't think it's a good sign-o'-the-times record like these three are, or, say, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is.
That said, i'm gonna listen to Dismemberment Plan right now cuz you got me thinking about it. thanks.
>>64296763
"1999-core" was a joke. they're still all pretty close together.
and it's a departure from the style they're known for but it's the most cohesive record they have and the purest distillation of ben's career. I saw an anon explain it a few days ago--ben is really talented but is incredibly inconsistent and has trouble with album structure. Reinhold nails both, and ends up with a structure that not only stands on its own but also mirrors Soft Bulletin's structure AND Aeroplane's. They all were the first big, mainstream records to utilize the modern album structure techniques that are now taken for granted in pretty much all genres.
also, reinhold is a grower. give it another chance!
>>64296892
>tfw pitchfork gives an album a 3.3
not saying that I agree with them, but the only song I remember from the album is Army, and I only remember hating it.
It felt like Brick, but lacking in emotional meaning. He was basically rocking the suburbs imo
>>64297154
did they really. huh.
and that album is sort of halfway between his solo stuff like rockin the suburbs and the old stuff like brick.
brick and Army are very different songs, though. Army's up-beat and tongue-in-cheek, Brick is subtle and sincere. If that's the only song you remember, I'd suggest giving it another listen.
>>64295224
I liked this album before I started coming here. It's memed every single day and I can't even take it serious anymore, stop listening to it for years.
but it came on a shuffle, and i let it play it was just as perfect as when I heard it years ago.
>>64297363
this desu. what's your opinion on the other two albums i mentioned, tripfriend?
>>64297154, you might be thinking of The Luckiest, which aside from the interesting rotation conceit in the composition i'd say is pretty meh. and p4k can go fuck itself.
>>64297568
i love both of them.
>>64295224
Now listen to On Avery Island.
>>64295224
Avoid Spiderland at all costs. Just whiney and shitty guitars. The absolute most boring album I have ever heard.
>>64296092
>>64300473
>Avoid Spiderland at all costs. Just whiney and shitty guitars. The absolute most boring album I have ever heard.
Don't listen to this faggot, it's /mu/'s current favorite album.
>>64300473
>most boring album I have ever heard
>those pinch harmonic-based riffs
>that guitar interplay
>those dynamics
>those time signatures
>that mood
If you can't recognize these qualities even withouth liking the album you shouldn't be discussing the album in the first place.
>>64295238
>10'000 days is better
>>64302077
the shortest tool album is the best tool album.
that way you have less tool to listen to
Listen to other NMH and Jeff Mangum stuff. The other album and the EPs are pretty great.
>>64295238
a clever producer would combine the best of this with aenima and it would be GOAT
