I don't know if you'll find too much more intellectual stimulation in the billboard hot 100 today, but of course this music is made to reach the largest audience possible and the majority of people are for lack of a better term- normies.
The message has to be as simple as possible, the lyrics and music have to appeal to the broadest audience and as a result all pop music seems vague, it all sounds the same because people are always trying to copy each other to match those same levels of success they witnessed, and now that they basically have "hit songs" down to a science whenever we hear something with a little bit of artistic license in the mainstream people love it.
Pop is drivel man but Madonna brought a lot of originality and courage to the stage and that's why people revere her.
