The overwhelming response to Viet Cong changing their name to Preoccupations, that I've seen, has been one of almost total apathy. Pretty much everyone seemed to have forgotten the band existed by that point. In short, people just got over it.
The same would likely happen here. If Mongoloid was released as a single today, there might be some controversy, but everyone would move on and DEVO would be no worse for wear.

Nerds are way too into video games and are unproductive today. No body does anything. The only music nerds and geeks like now are over produced electro dubstep or wrist slashing heavy metal.
