For example U2, hugely successful but do you know anyone that actually likes their music? Same with Prince. They have sold many albums but no one can name anyone that is an actual fan.
I have a theory for this, these people have wealthy relatives that buy their albums in mass stock to make them look like popular artists.
I am correct aren't I /mu/?
Explains a lot....
>>64281396
I personally am a PF fan and I know many, so...
Nickelback
>>64281066
ebin job bryan
>>64281066
Bonobos
Adam Clay-2,000 pounds
Thedge
Larry Mullins Sr.'s Son
The lovable lads from Liverpool, great rock and roll, uh, music.
It's true. people go on U2 gigs as a social event to be seen and tell other people they were there, not because they enjoy their music. they most likely only know some of their biggest hits
>>64281689
stop forcing this shitty meme you fuel injected faggot
>>64281793
you reacting to him only feeds the troll.
I know plenty of Prince fans. They're all about 40 years old but that's who his fans were. Us youngsters just never fully embraced him (even though we should).
No one actually likes U2 so you still have a point there
>>64281396
I think they currently have more fans than the beatles
>>64281066
tons of people (including me) like U2's old shit.
don't know anyone who's liked any of their post-2000 stuff though
My dad is a huge fan of U2
>>64281066
I knew two hardcore U2 fans, both loved all of U2, even the 2000s stuff.
They were also total fucking twats
I'm a pretty decent well-rounded U2 fan

>>64282600
Are you a closet homosexual?
>>64282600
R u Bono
>>64282600
why are they simply early radiohead ripoffs?
>>64282635
Steady qt gf for the past six years actually
There's plenty of entry points into U2's discography for people who stick to certain genres, like post-punk for their early discography and EDM/alt rock for their 90's output
The Joshua Tree is one of the greatest albums of all time.
>>64282684
They've shamelessly and famously ripped off Ramones, not even Radiohead wants to rip off early Radiohead
>>64282710
Why is it that they were never able to surpass War?
>>64281066
It's probably because their quality plummeted at the second half of the 90's
>>64282733
ok kid
>>64282746
They started working with Eno after that album, so their sound drastically changed from post-punk to more chamber rock
The songwriting's still all there, it's just the sound's changed
I like their music....Saw them live first time on the ZOOTV Tour...saw them 4 times since then.
and I'm old enough to be most of /mu/'s grand father in all likelihood
>>64281066
I like U2 in the 80's. Pride is a great song.
Prince I agree with, he was overly sexual and annoying.
>>64281675
This
>>64282746
>Why is it that they were never able to surpass War?
But they did.
>>64283066
Pride is a great song. Not sure how anyone who gives it an honest non meme'd listen can not like it.

most people thought that was U2, EBN were barely credited
/mu/ is still falling for the U2 is bad meme?
I get Bono can be annoying and that marketing debacle with their latest album was embarrassing, but their output from Boy to Pop was consistently great.
>>64283168
It's a shame this album is so criminally underrated and unknown.
>>64283168
not bad
just overall average
>>64283135
They're both great, I'm a Sort of Homecoming guy though
Joshua Tree was an instant classic, like they took the direction they were headed in 1984, took three years to perfect it and released something that really stood out from the rest
>>64283189
Probably because it's never been commercially reissued..Miss Sarajevo and Your Blue Room show up on U2 rarity collections, otherwise it'll likely remain an obscurity
>>64283200
>just overall average
Taking their whole discography into account I really fail to see how they're average. Even everything they've done since 2000 hasn't been completely mediocre, NLotH is good and Songs of Innocence is okay. They were consistently fantastic for two full decades, released some of the most influential albums of the 80s and 90s, and ZooTV is still probably the greatest multi-media frenzy ever put on by a band. Four weaker albums doesn't outweigh their 7-8 great ones.
>>64283135
Love "Bad" the drum build to the chorus is great. I also watched the Live Aid rendition on Television which really solidified U2 to super stardom.
>>64283225
Pretty much every song on that album except Elvis Ate America is a gem, what a shame. Slug is probably my favorite song of theirs.
>>64283265
None of their albums are "fantastic" I would say. I'll admit they were good in the 80s and even better later on but never great.
I liked The Gold Experience
>>64281066
Only aspies find it hard to relate to U2's music.
>>64283388
>anything Bono related
>relate-able
maybe to fucking spergs
>>64282684
Lmao more like Radiohead ripped of U2's Achtung Baby and Soundtracks Vol. 1 with Ok Computer
>>64283422
>implying you found what you're looking for
okay mark
>>64281886
I know plenty of younger people who love Prince (myself included) but honestly do not know a single person who likes any U2 stuff later than the 80s.
>>64283189
This is literally Kid A before Kid A was a thing but ambient/psychadelic influenced. Top 3 U2 albums desu senpai
>>64283422
>songs about drug abuse
>songs about faith and doubt
>political songs
>songs about failed relationships and disillusionment with the notion of romance
>songs about turning from faith and pursuing pleasures
>songs about family members dying and grieving
I mean, sure, nothing is relate-able if you're a fucking robot.
Who doesn't like fucking Prince? Who on earth doesn't know and like 1999, Raspberry Beret, When Doves Cry, Let's Go Crazy, Little Red Corvette, Kiss?
Fucking myopia is wild on this board.

This. You're blinded by the "Bono is a douche therefore U2 suck" meme. Achtung Baby was one of the most influential 90's albums and The Edge is arguably one of the most guitarists around. Until him, no one used delay like him.
>>64283571
Early Radiohead were pretty much following U2's blueprint. Only idiotic millennials that get their opinions from Matt and Trey don't see that.

>>64284131
point is U2 isn't good man
>>64283971
Just wanted to pop in and let you know you're wrong. Go read some interviews from Radiohead in the 90s, the band talks about this pretty openly. They ultimately took a different direction with Kid A and everything that followed, but the influence is still there. Radiohead has always been a "pop" band.
Also, U2 have made some great records. You should revisit War with an open mind.
Radiohead fans get so triggered when it's brought up that they were heavily influenced by U2
The band's admitted they watched the Red Rocks show a lot
>>64284165
Okay anon.
>>64284172
They're a pop band miles ahead of whatever kind of shit band U2 is.
>>64284215

>>64284187
I think it's really only a certain type of Radiohead fan, typically someone younger and newer to the fanbase.
In my experience, Radiohead's the kind of band that pushes their audience, so a lot of long time fans are people who like digging into music and will listen to different things. Most serious Radiohead fans I've met eventually move onto other, less well known artists (like Can or Autechre, for example) while still retaining an appreciation for the band.

I do think Amok is pretty good and doesn't get the credit it deserves. Then again I do find In Rainbows incredibly overrated.
I liked it
>>64281066
My mother likes both U2 and Prince and has seen both in concert and bought their albums. I imagine there are many like her.
U2 is the only band that I'm actually certain my dad is a fan of though.

Achtung Baby is great
