Murray Street was definitely some of their better work, I'll say that much.
I've been listening to the entire SY discography for a couple of years (fuck it's been half a decade already, fuuuuuuuck) and it's average in my opinion. Track 1 and 11 suck, I really like Sunday and The Ineffable Me and the rest are ok as easy listening background music (except maybe for French Tickler which has a bit of a-tonal bite). It's kind of a drawn out trance inducing album. Soothing/boring depending on what you're looking for.
Generally for every album there's 1 or 2 songs I really like, a few I regular like, and can stand to listen to the rest once in a while except for 1 or 2 (or 3) which I perennially skip/remove. Every single album. One big problem I find is them adding terrible noise and dragging out songs for no reason. I love Pattern Recognition but I edited out the ending eventually because it was an unbearable waste of time. The worst is when they put it right in the middle of the song.
Like I said before, a decidedly average band despite all their talent. I find all of them to be lazy with their music. Thurston is a lazy lyricist, Ranaldo is a lazy vocalist and Kim is a lazy musician. Their compositions quickly go from intricate and balanced to effortlessly messy. They tend to start with something good but they seldom finish it without getting lost.
My 2 cents, anyways.

I don't think Thurston knows when to quit. He put out that solo album a few years ago, and I initially liked what I was hearing but that changed a few tracks in. None of the songs really hold any substance on their own against the rest, and they all drag out about 5 minutes too long.
I think the album with the best balance of music and dissonance was definitely Sister. Everything on that album is incredibly balanced. The noise actually adds to the music, instead of getting in the way of it. And Lee's track is good for once! It's their best work in my opinion.

Assuming the two overlong dismal tracks closing the album don't exist, Meat is Murder just sounds like a lesser version of their other work. There's no real highlights (assuming How Soon is Now isn't on the album) and as a result, the jangle pop style just gets old because there's no really good songwriting to support it, something that's crucial with the genre IMO. (The Headmaster Ritual comes close, but even that suffers from a lack of truly defined elements)

But it's true. Every Sleater-Kinney before before and after is sterile compared to The Woods. Even One Beat, which has Oh! (which has their best chorus) is plagued by hollow "political" lyrics, an unchanging sound, and a lack of defined instrumentation. The rest of their album only exemplify this further.
Sorry I don't like every /mu/core band I listen to but Sleater-Kinney have noticeable flaws. You may not think so but at least acknowledge that people can dissent without trolling.
