How do you like that marshall? I was thinking of buying one but all the clips i've heard online make the distortion sound kind of buzzy.
>>
>>64254771
It's pretty great, I honestly have no complaints. I've been able to dial in each what I've wanted every time without too much of a hassle. The trick is to tone down the distortion a little bit and up the bass.
>>
>>64254771
Were you listening to clips of the DSL40C or DSL401? The DSL40C is a lot better.

This looks ugly as hell, it's literally one of those shitty 2000s Charvel Skatecasters. And why would you want humbuckers in a Jazzmaster that gets rid of any unique tone from the thin single coils they regularly have.

Some of you people have wack taste.
>>
>>64256547
>>64256478
I might be wrong but I was quite sure that you could just use 9's on a Jazzmaster since they're regular Fender scale length. On the Jaguar and Mustang, you probably want to use tens or elevens due to the shorter scale.
>>
>>64256673

It's because of the bridge. Apparently that bridge fucks up somehow if you put too thin strings on it.
>>
>>64256478
Buy a mastery bridge, problem solved.
>>
>>64256710
Oh right, yeah you should honestly upgrade any Fender bridge though, even the modern ones are still pretty shitty. I can't think of many guitar manufacturers that come with good stock bridges unless they use real Floyd Roses or other shit.

I have been playing guitar for 22 years.

I have owned and played tons of Fenders, but I always loved my first electric which was a Yamaha Pacifica strat. Yamaha makes great guitars and they are, imo, a much better deal than any Fender or Squier. Obv not as nice as an Am Std strat, but a 120 dollar Yamaha blows a MIM or CV Squier out of the fuckin park

Anyways, I hope my next purchase will be a Yamaha Samurai. These things just look fuckin cool and from what I have read they are very comfortable to play
>>
>>64256735

I fucking hate my Ibanez Edge. It's really a one trick pony, and that is if you have long hair and like 'abusing' the bar. But I have outgrown that thing and its a hassle to maintain the guitar.

Vintage Yamaha's are great. I want to pick up one of pic related some day but they're pretty expensive, in the $1000+ range now. They also made some pretty cool basses in the 70s and 80s. I really feel that the highest quality regular guitars were the MIJ ones from the 80s and early 90s.
>>
>>64256769

I literally got fed up with my Ibanez edge tremelo on my nice old RG and took it to the shop and traded down to a MIM strat. I was so fuckin tired of having to do a complete setup everytime I broke a string. Floyds/Edge/Kahler whatever are just a pain in the ass. Honestly, fender trems are also a pain in the ass but much less bothersome after you get it set up right, it will stay that way. Just a pain in the ass restringing and getting everyting stretched and settled again

>>64256818
Can't you block FRs/Kahler/Edges ?
>>
>>64256818
Real Floyd Roses are pretty great, I don't even play any shred stuff, I just use it with a clean sound to get sort of a nice warbly sound sometimes and occasionally to do dive bombs from chords which sounds much different than the hair metal style.

Plus a real one has great tuning stability if setup properly and I do like that the bar is much more sensitive than most "vintage style" tremolos. But really it's just something to have on one guitar, it would be a pain if my only guitar was my one with a locking tremolo.
>>
>>64256883

Props to you I guess. It's the best tremolo out there, best tuning stability, widest range. But fuck its a bitch to maintain.

I'm probably gonna get a Tele for its fixed bridge, but I'm considering the jazzmaster because it's trem can be easily blocked. Then again I'm not comfortable with 11 gauge strings..

>>

I was looking at a jazzmaster, it's short 24" scale might make 11 gauge not seem like a nightmare. But holy shit it's like someone pimped the 'electric' in an electric guitar.
>>

jaguars are the short ones. Jazzys are 25.5 like a strat/tele
>>

So are there any guitarists who write pieces for electric guitars solely?

>>
>>64258556

Not instrumentals, I'm talking about pieces written for the electric. Like some sort of Sonata or something, even though it doesn't need to be classical.

I know acoustics and classical have lots of writers for them, but no one seems to bother about the electric. That's sad.

Anyway, used to be a big fan of AAL and CHON, they are pretty tight.

Honestly, how the fuck does a bridge get that fucked up? I'm not being a dick. I really can't figure it out.

I get how a guitar body and some of the hardware could get banged up over time, , but this is continuous, deep scraping down below the level of the strings.
>>
>>64259254
Man, I love those brass pick guards.
>>
>>64259723
The first reason would be sweat since I play a lot, and maybe the salty air since I live on the coast, it keeps getting worse and the problem is only on the uppermost saddles.
Besides it's chinese hardware, cheap molded iron that's the metal version of basswood.
Also the bridge's placed like shit and the high E goes off the fretboard at the end of the neck, and I can't get it to intonate right.
So basically I don't really mind the rust on that bridge, it already plays like shit and will probably dissolve itself in the next few months if I keep at it.

So Ibanez wants me to use a Mr. Clean magic eraser to get this excess whatever off... pretty sure that will fuck up the satin finish
>>
>>64259723
acidic sweat is the main reason. i have acidic sweat but i clean my saddles so they don't get all grunged up and nasty. everyone should routinely check their saddles/bridges and clean them because eventually, unless you have like stainless steel saddles, the strings will eat and dig burrs in saddles and that will cause problems
>>
>>64260307
What about the seller/distributor mate? I agree with you, it will mess the satin finish.
>>
>>64260307
maybe try naphtha or lighter fluid? don't take my word on it, google it, but it's a good degreaser.
>>
>>64260443
I've been in contact with GearTree and customer service should have contacted Ibanez about how to return the guitar since I don't have the original box. Apparently they only restated the magic eraser part. I might have to restate that I want to exchange it for a good one.

You should indeed get a guitar and learn how it works. Or maybe your guitarist is shit.
>>
>>64261418
Maybe they just need to use different chord voicings. Also playing chords with several close intervals on distorted or overdriven guitar usually doesn't sound that great. Often you can take the fifth out of a chord completely and/or move the third up an octave to have a less dense, more piano sounding voicing, ala Eric Johnson.

This dude has some pretty great chordal chops, imo:

How do you even prevent that ? It's already started to happen on mine but I'd like to know for my next guitar, would just cleaning sweat solve it ?

He just said it in the very post you replied to. A saddle that's not made of butter metal.
>>
>>64261589
The Flashback is cool, analog isn't as natural as a true analog, hence me asking. But it covers everything quite well and TonePrint is nice if you have time to test out the loads of options you can download. If you don't need any of the options to flick through all of the delays on the fly on the Flashback, the Flashback mini might be more your style so you can download which echoy delay works best for you and save some $$

My primary guitar is a 2013 American Tele, the main issue with the stock 'bent steel' saddles is that they occasionally leave the factory with a very small metal burr at the apex of the saddle where the string makes contact. They can look perfectly filed to the naked eye but for some reason you keep snapping strings right at the saddle. That leaves you with two options, get the saddles refiled by a shop (or try yourself) or swap the saddles out for another type (I went with Gotoh saddles and haven't had an issue since). I think a lot of people buying Teles today will eventually swap out their saddles anyway, I've never met somebody that prefers the 'bent steel' saddles over brass barrels or Gotoh types.

It should be fine as long as far as being banged around so long as you're careful about where it goes in the stack of other luggage. But, personally, I'd be more concerned with temps down there.

Honestly, though, it all depends on the quality of the guitar. You transporting a $500 guitar? Don't sweat it. You transporting a $5k guitar? Fucking buy a ticket for it.

I mentioned my 2013 American Tele above. Do you consider 25.5'' short scale? My SG is 24.75''. The string tension on my Telecaster is definitely higher than on my SG, the SG is easier to bend with the same tension strings but has less tuning stability compared to the Tele. Modern Teles are the most stable guitars I've ever played, very little pitch wobble, very solid and durable builds. The main selling point of modern American Teles to me is the pickups, they are so much fun, tons of personality, especially when paired with Fender or Fender-styled amps. Classic twang and bite in your bridge position, spanky and full in the middle position, thick and silky in the neck position. They're also very comfortable to play in any position, have fantastic necks (especially the maple necks), and are super easy to work on/setup.

Just trying to get back to play after a 2 month downtime. I dont have the mood lately

Pic related, love tiny valve amps
>>
>>64264389
I'm assuming it's a tube amp. That should definitely be sufficient for practice but maybe not for an gig without a PA. I have to dime my 40W Bandmaster sometimes to get over my drummer in certain live situations.
>>
>>64264439
My solid state hybrid's 20w and it's loud enough to play over a drummer without cranking it up.
>>
>>64264403
only the modern players that state they're short scale are short scale, as far as i know, only a strat and tele modern player short scale made their way to the US from the UK in late 14 early 15 exclusively through guitar center, but it was a limited run and i believe there are no more short scale modern players, on the new market that is, you could probably find used or new old stock of those on ebay, craigslists, etc.

>>
>>64264482
and a lot of people use AC15s with no problem, too. I don't normally roll my volume knob up more than halfway during practice but I play a lot of house shows where the stage volume has to be loud as fuck and I need enough headroom for my pedals.

i agree, they're not that pretty but i think fender makes em like that on purpose to distinguish them from their non-modern player line. and yeah, i wish they made more short scale, or at least they should have made a regular run of the short scale strat and tele.

I tried a HH tele in a guitar shop while testing pedals a couple years back when I started seriously practicing. I really liked the feel of it, but I have a LTD Viper with humbuckers, rendering it samey in my opinion.
Should I have considered getting it?
>>
>>64264680
That's because a lot of people forget sound isn't linear, the difference between 100 and 120w isn't the same as between 20 and 40w, and there are a lot of other factors than just power, the design of the amp and the speakers come to mind.

I have a Musicmaster II (posted a few threads back) which is a Duosonic without the bridge pickup. It's routed for one though, so it can be converted from a MM into a DS, hence the "II" on the end of the name. I love it, it's my only vintage guitar and it has a lot of character. It's beautiful, too.

Is it a good guitar? Eh... who cares, it's cool and fun. Just be warned that setting the intonation on that bridge/tailpiece SUCKS. Mine is pretty spot-on at the moment, but it was a pain to get it there.

I think Mustangs sound a bit better but if you want a hardtail/something less run-of-the-mill, go for the DuoSonic!
>>
My current rig. Need some LEDs to go in the gaps where the old pots were. It's currently got a Seymour Duncan humbucker with a killswitch and a volume pot. Didn't like the built in EQ.

Next up is a portaflex 2x10, a korg rack tuner and a flight case then I'm set.
>>
>>64264704
When they first started making Squier classic vibes they had a duo sonic model, but they discontinued it, maybe for lack of interest?
>>
>>64265076
Mustang has the hot dog tremolo and 3 position switches for each pickup so you can set them both to "out of phase" but imo those extra positions sound weird.

>>
>>64266131
being able to hear a melody in your head and being able to play it immediately is the most important thing for improv, if you find yourself "playing with your fingers" rather than 'playing with your ears" then it's just never going to sound right

To develop that skill, Learn to sight sing with solfege, it will help you translate what's in your head but also will speed up how you pick up melodies or riffs by ear.
>>

I was expecting twinkle twinkle little star, you really disappointed me.
>>
>>64266243
How do you get to the point where you can do that?
>>
>>64266586
it takes a while, you need to internalize all the scales, chords, chord extensions, arpeggios, intervals, songs you've learned, etc, all the shit you practice you should be able to just grab them at will to get what you want out of them

i guess you could just skip all that and go straight to practicing what you hear in your head, but chances are what you hear in your head is directly related to all that stuff i listed

its a lot of work
>>
>>64266586
Just play stuff you know/hear or noodle around for several hours. Building fretboard literacy doesn't always require things as rigid as drilling scales or transcribing an entire song note-for-note, although those definitely things help.
You just have to play a lot to eliminate the guesswork and start playing with your ears. Play a ton, play every day, and then play some more.

The Jazzmaster is actually a stupid and shitty design, coming from someone HAD to have one and learned my lesson.
>>
>>64266836
he's actually not picking that fast to be honest. the difficult part with playing like that is consistency and nailing everything with your fretting hand. shredders seem to neglect how developed your fretting hand needs to be to play that fast, that's where the really complicated stuff is, the right hand is just going up and down and a (hopefully) consistent pace

I figured /mu/ guitar thread would be the place to ask:

i doubt anything like that exists, it might be possible if you are only feeding the program something like a song with only 1 instrument, like a solo guitar piece, but i can't imagine it's possible to do that with a full band or something, too many things going at once

>>
>>64267272
the number doesn't matter, find some spot where you can kind of play it, but not a spot where you are completely out of your depth. so find some balance between those two

keep doing that until you get to where the song BPM is
>>
>>64264102
It's a piece of shit lol, worst guitar I've ever played, but I absolutely love it regardless, no plans on selling it, it's worth keeping around as a conversation piece. The bender device was invented by a dude in Vancouver, he built the guitar out of a counter top and a Squire strat neck to test it with brass barrel saddles, the bender basically caused the b string to saw through the saddle, no bueno. I'm the third owner, I replaced the brass barrels with Gotoh saddles which work way better with the bender mechanism and re-finished it with a uniform natural brown to compliment my other Tele, but the neck and pickups are trash. It has these terrible 60s Teisco pickups in it that probably sounded fine once upon a time but all three have since gone super microphonic so they pick up everything, you can knock on the headstock and it comes through the amp as loud as any note. It could be restored with a new neck and pickups into a pretty great guitar, I probably will eventually, but as of today it's only fun to look at and joke about.
>>
>>64266962
my 80s keyboard can do this, but it doesn't export. To do it with guitar you just need a some way of converting yo midi, and there are many methods to do so.

>>64267590
i don't think that's what he wants, i think he wants a program that he can run a song through and have tabs/sheet music auto generated

>>64261527
Thank you, i'll try to use your tips
>>
>>64267829
oh, yeah. It'd be way too noisy. But I'm sure something slightly less than automatic is possible. You'd need to at least partially isolate each instrument, then prune the false detections.
>>
>>64264686
My band makes about $200-500 every week or two from playing shows (depending on merch sales and how much of a jew the promoter is). We've also made $100 from a free-download/pay-what-you-want EP that we put out recently. All of it and more goes back into a band fund that gets used for more merch orders, promotion expenses, gear replacement, etc. It's pretty much impossible to make any net profit as a local band
>>
>>64268197
If you have a cover band that plays weddings you can rake in a ton.
>>
>>64267878
It's probably already potted. If the covers are plastic the potting is easier to get right, but poor coil potting can still create some microphonics. If you don't have probpens don't worry about it.

>>
>>64268298
I don't have any disrespect for cover bands that make money. If I were an older musician without much else going on I would totally join one of those bands, jam on some classic songs for drunk strangers who don't care, eat/drink for free, and split a few thousand dollars with the rest of the band at the end of the night. Not a bad gig. Obviously wouldn't consider that now, in my early 20s though, fuck that.
>>
>>64264686
meh

i play in a cover band and i get anywhere from $60-250 per gig, the high numbers are exclusively private parties. i can't live off it, not possible where i live, i'd need to gig every single day to barely make minimum wage.

wedding bands and things like that make some decent money, but you really need to know how to play to get some of those gigs, i'm talking knowing hundreds/thousands of songs and being able to pull them out of your ass at a moments notice. wedding bands are kind of going away too, a lot of people now just get a DJ.

then there's studio musicians, which is even more difficult to get into, that's another area where you really really really need to know your shit and need to be able to play in a shit load of styles and be able to sight read quickly.

shits hard man
>>
>>64268357
Maybe. Explain why you think that may be the case.
>>
>>64268023
It takes a long time compared to keyboard if you're talking about writing for it. Better to just make sure you have the chords you want the guitar part to be played on. It's likely to be on other chords different from what you're playing.

You'll never get 100 out of two el34s. Cool looking stuff though. Reminds me of a Dynaco. The partridge transformers are what you'd see in hiwatts and sound city's. The potted transformer is a mystery, but they went the extra mile.

at least some of them are interesting. Better than the dude I met who had a wall of gibson les palls, the other wall of prs, and one heavy relic fender telecaster that he always played.

>tfw your strats body doesn't match the maple neck and will never look this naturally pretty.

The suffering. I should have looked at a wood comparison in person before i bought it or stepped up and got the oiled ash because the fender websites photos are a bit lighter. I still like it though, i might just give it a rosewood neck

really hope to score one of these someday

Hey guys, guitar pleb here again
I've become a bit more active because I'll be getting back to my guitar soon and I should clear questions up first
My mentor/teacher has been bedridden for a few days now (rang him up and his wife said he hadn't been feeling well lately, possibly caught Dengue) so he might not be helping me out
On the last thread a friendly anon advised me to have my guitar set up. I currently own a pic related and am looking into having some adjustments made to it. I'm quite short on cash and was wondering what cost-effective mods can be made to enhance my shitty playing experience aside from getting gud at playing. Also, what's the best course of action to take? Assuming I can't get my mentor to help me out during the process.
Thanks again for the help.

are you vincent gallo?

If you want, you can try to set the action and intonation yourself so you don't need to pay a shop. I did it to a Squier I picked up recently, and it sounds much better and plays nicer too. I also readjusted the pickup height.
My nut is really worn out so I'm switching that out this weekend.

Not really sure what you can do mods wise.

replace all electronics and hardware. get a quality replacement neck and a new body made out of better wood.
