I just got a guitar given to me and I'm going to re-string/tune it.

It's an ESP Viper and I am most definitely looking to play some thrash.

Should I half-step E, or...?

..and does /mu/ have any suggestions for brands/types of strings?

OP here.. should this go to /adv/?

No but you might be better off in /GG/

Make sure you don't get string that are too heavy because the tension will bend the neck over time.

don't half-step yet, get good thick strings

not flat wound, thrash can handle the rattle and you'll probablky get better grip (you're just a fucking troll aint ya)

um, go heavy Ernies, you need the tension, those rubber thin strings won't make a man out of you
>>
>>64253161

Dude, you ROCK!! Thank you...

So should I get thicker Ernies, though?

9's, 10's, or 11's I should say*
>>
>>64253161
lol I don't know shit about thrash. I thought you had to set-up a bridge if you wanted heavy tension?
>>
>>64253246
11s I swear by them, lovely , really good, get used to them and you'll be a better player and have a better sound than the rest of your grade

Skinny top heavy bottom will do

no 50 up top, please, no ladies here
>>
>>64253322

Thanks, man. Seriously :)
>>
>>64253357
You'll be fine with 10's, anon

11's make bending too much work
>>
>>64253411
ththththtth thrash

you're going to be going 00000000000-222-4-5-200000 at 90

get god now man
>>
>>64253411

I will, anon.

In fact, all success will be attributed to the hacker known as 4chan.

I've never understood the heavy string gauge thing. Doesn't Iommi play like fucking 8's or something? I play 9's and I can sound heavy as fuck.

>get god now man

you biblefags are the worst
>>
Satan never lies
>>
>>64253322
Can you play in E standard with 11s?
>>
>>64253513
Yeah - 11s are the lightest I use on my acoustics, usually use 12s, though

11s on electrics are fine, but you don't need as much tension to make things work - let the pickups do their job

Alright, thanks man! I was just thinking about adding heavier strings to get that fatter sound, I guess.
