I think it's more that any top ten hit, especially between 50's to 70's was usually much more interesting, original, non pandering (very debatable, being obtuse) and required a specific group of musicians. Now top ten is generally computer generated music over lyrics written by other peoples. I'm generalizing, but it's objectively observable that the mechanization of most popular music is off putting to some die hard musicians

During the earlier part of the recorded music era, you'd typically have a shit-ton of different versions of the same tracks recorded by different studio's artists and the real battle was over getting your preferred version into stores over the other guys.

Modern popular music (i.e. shit that wasn't a twelve bar song with a double bass or some fucking crooner) was just developing and the breadth of ideas being explored could mostly be documented by who was charting. Obviously that's gonna miss a lot of stuff but who was really popular and who was actually doing something different aligned a lot better.
NOW there are way more musicians and genres and ways to find said music and the shit that reaches the absolute top is easier to package into "whatever can be danced to/get you to pay attention to my car commercial" category. You also have to account for the fact that there was a tremendous cultural shift happening that made the newer, edgier stuff that much more fashionable.
