I know nothing about jazz. What are some albums you'd give a 10-7 that I should check out.

What's a 10-7?
>>
ornette coleman - shape of jazz to come
miles davis - kind of blue
herbie hancock - empyrean isles
cannonball adderley - somethin else

all 'entry level picks' but they're all essential
>>
>>64244784
10/10 to 7/10
>>
>>64244784
a 3
>>
>>64244404
What are you looking for?
>>
>>64244431
i don't think a black saint and a sinner lady is a good place to start
OP, you should start with duke ellington or billie holiday. jazz is easier to get into when the melody is clearly defined by a voice or an instrument
>>
>>64244784
an autistic way of saying good or better
>>
Good entry level stuff that hasn't been mentioned:

>John Coltrane - Blue Train
>John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
>John Coltrane - Live at the Village Vanguard
>Pharoah Sanders - Karma
>Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda
>Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
>Miles Davis - In A Silent Way

Leave stuff like Albert Ayler and Ornette Coleman for later.
>>
Listen to Bill evans' waltz for Debby.

If you don't get it, jazz isn't for you.

This is my personal favorite, very straightforward too.

swat a fly in the air with your pinky. if you don't get it movement isnt for you

jazz isn't meant to be exclusive

I see. I thought maybe it was one of those radio codes like the emergency services use, but "ten seven" apparently means "out of service", so I was confused lol
>>
>>64245159
I didn't want to say from 10/10 to 7/10 but I guess 10-7 is just as bad
>>
>>64244784
3
>>
miles davis - sketches of spain
eric dolphy - out to lunch
thelonious monk - it's monk's time
thelonious monk - monk's dream (if you can't into 'it's monk's time')
>>64244431
not at all a good place to start dude
>>
>>64245193
If you'd said "7-10", I would have known you were talking about ratings immediately. But I guess you want to hear about the 10s first, huh.

Pretty weak bait. Much too obvious. 3/10.

Bill Evans' "Sunday at the Village Vanguard" is one of the best.

I've listened casually to some Japanese jazz artists and IIRC, the tag I've seen in most of them is "acid jazz".

What are some classic acid jazz albums I should listen to?

Wynton Marsalis is a pretty rad dude. Check out J-Mood. Pretty chill trumpet junk. Some dissonance, but nothing that should turn you off in my opinion.

I should have noticed someone mentioned coltrane on /mu/ There I could have taken a hint I was being fucked with

If you're a weeb like me, Kids on the Slope could be a nice starting point to get a few artists. Otherwise, you could probably just go chronologically through Miles Davis' catalog. Nigga played basically every style of jazz from bebop and cool jaz in the 50's to weird jazz rap stuff in the 90's. There are some real fucking gems in there.
>>
>>64244431
despite what the others are saying, I'd say this is a fine start if you're already into music the way many on this board are
>>64245410
is this b8

Out to Lunch isn't a jazz album for someone who knows nothing about jazz

>Out to Lunch isn't a jazz album for someone who knows nothing about jazz
its pretty easy to understand senpai
>>
>>64244431
In same boat as OP.

Listening to this right now and really digging it.
>>
>>64250043
fuck, you don't start listening to jazz with fucking black saint and a sinner lady
i don't understand this thread
>>
>>64250535
It was the first one. What's wrong with that? It's fucking awesome.
>>
I'm not much into jazz. So for people who don't like jazz here's a couple that are good:
Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus
and Pharoah Sanders - Karma
>>
>>64250578
yes, it is fucking awesome, but it shouldn't be where you start because you don't yet understand the base of jazz or the progresssion in jazz history that lead to black saint/sinner lady.
it's just too bad because you would've been able to really appreciate the music and how it has been built
>>
>>64250670
Maybe hearing it first, then going back and listening to all of that will make me appreciate it more. Maybe it will be better a second time.
>>
>>64250742
here are a few important artists organized in a shitty, sometimes inaccurate timeline just because jazz:
jelly roll morton, scott joplin, geeshie wiley, joséphine baker, james p. johnson, duke ellington, count basie, louis armstrong, oscar peterson, charlie parker, dizzy gillespie, benny goodman, billie holiday, ella fitzgerald, miles, coltrane, mingus, fuck ornette coleman, gerry mulligan, bill evans, eric dolphy, mahavishnu orchestra, herbie hancock, weather report, pat metheny, chick corea, MC ride, lyle mays, i almost forgot jim hall and jobim and astrud/joao gilberto and yusef lateef and dexter gordon and bessie smith and glenn miller and fuckin dave brubeck and vi redd and keith jarrett and paul chambers and wynton kelly and jesus fuck why did i just do that
>>
>>64250742
oh and here you go just for fun (this is not jazz but afrobeat) (i love you for your interest in jazz) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYcZ4M0uroA&index=106&list=FLYuS9DVsIbkKcQ2_IK7e2lg

I hear Us3 is a quintessential acid jazz band, as it was defined by Gilles Peterson. Not sure if that's what you're looking for, though
>>
>>64250973
Jesus that's quite the clusterfuck of a list. I actually know of a surprising amount of those. Really into hip-hop so I guess there is some jazz overlap there. I'll save this list and check all of these out over the next few weeks.
>>
>>64251134
sorry, i am drunk, but i feel satisfied by the fact that you decided to save this clusterfuck of a list anyways.
>>
>>64250973
why does it say mc ride
>>
>>64251186
because MC Ride is a great bebop jazz saxophonist bass player i said bebop right?
>>
>>64251175
Haha that explains a lot.

I've liked the jazz that I've heard in my days but never got into it just because there's so much. This is the time, apparently.
>>
>>64250973
>mc ride
wut
>>
>>64251225
i totally understand this feeling, didn't know where to start either when i did, but it is so fucking worth it
oh, sweet jass
>>
>>64251259
It will be even more worth it for me. Hoping it gives me some inspiration for my own music.

Anyone wishing to get more into jazz should come check out the weekly /Blindfold Test/ thread every Friday. It's fun and a great way to discover/talk about jazz. Everybody's welcome whether you've listened to only a little jazz or a lot.

This week's theme is the criss cross record label.
