i mean there were more influential rock albums in the 80's but yeah kinda this
>>

>the most influential rock album since late 80s
Doesn't make it good.
>innovative musical structures
How are they innovative?
>ahead of its time
How was it ahead of its time?
>>
it's the same shitty uninspired riff over and over again

there are MANY albums more influential than this:

>rema-rema - wheel in
>swans - filth
>fucking surfer rosa
>big black
>black circus
>butthole surfers
>even fucking soundgarden
>>
>>64230829
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Sonic Youth was a pathetic bunch of TVU-wannabes, one of the most overrated bands of all time.

how are they not innovative? nothing like it had ever been made. only polvo has come close to doing something like this. it was ahead of its time because of how innovative it was

too bad every member of the band were fucking assholes
>>
>>64231109
at least they used a drum machine to show how little it mattered.
for 80's rock, big black, swans and sonic youth are all pretty good imo. sonic youth just happens to have a shittier discography in the 90's
>>
>>64231104

lol ok. you just keep telling yourself that.
>>
>>64231104

When you call something "innovative" or "interesting", you have to explain what exactly makes it "innovative" or "interesting".
Just saying that it's "the musical structures" or "the composition" doesn't explain it either, you have to elaborate on this. What makes the musical structures interesting or innovative?
>>
reading this thread made me really crave listening to this album, thanks guys. fantastic album. feels like a summer breeze

The Sprawl
Silver Rocket
Teen Age Riot
Providence
Kissability
Eric's Trip
Total Trash
Candle
Rain King
>>

thanks to it, Nirvana and other shitty grunge bands happened, don't ever forget that

Daydream Nation is my favorite album ever and Teen Age Riot is the best track m8
>>
>>64231439
have you tried listening past the first 3 minutes you mouthbreather
>>
>>64231449
what? thats my favorite album you dumb motherfucker
>>
>>64231504
yeah i know it's the only one you own, now try actually listening to it
>>
>>64230986
Daydream Nation was ahead of its time because it fused noise with pop melodies in a rock 'n' roll band, something very few bands had successfully, in such an accessible way, done up to that point.

The "musical structures" are innovative because again, nothing on Daydream Nation is particularly hard on the ears or painful to listen to despite the band coming from a significantly more confrontational musical background. Yet it still retains that aspect of noise without sacrificing melody, or hooks. Plus the massive breakdowns and songs melting into extended noise jams is again, innovative for its time. At the very least the album is notable for writing such great songs around dissonant noise shit and weirdo guitar tunings.

It is totally a great album. The whole thing reeks of attitude, it's punk and rock and noise condensed into a couple of songs.
>>
>>64231439
I hold this exact opinion as well

The Sprawl is a close second though
>>
>>64231761
Thanks for posting something more insightful, I wish more people on /mu/ would explain their opinions instead of just calling something "interesting" or "innovative".
>Plus the massive breakdowns and songs melting into extended noise jams is again, innovative for its time.
What about The Velvet Underground? Sister Ray for example is exactly that. Or Les Rallizes dénudés (not sure if they count though since most of their recordings were released after DN).
>>
>>64231989
>What about The Velvet Underground? Sister Ray for example is exactly that.
No it isn't
It's more like Loaded than that song

Because of Teen age riot. That's the only reason.
>>

it's not the only song i like but it is my favorite part of the album
also it's very much the opposite from the rest of the album the fuck senpai

Two words: Silver Rocket.
>>
>>64235559
Eliminator Jr. is just a pissed off angular riff repeated over and over followed by primitive drumming and a few dissonant chords thrown in towards the end, literally the opposite of what the album was doing
