head-fi he-400s planar magnetics might be worth looking into. i've got the regular he-400 and he-500 and they are both rather nice. i imagine the 400s give a good taste of what seperates electrodynamics from dynamcis

Videos with compressed audio tend to cut off the higher frequencies. The 19kHz was actually easier to hear than the one previous, and it's partially due to some of the artifacting that occurs. Or it's due to headphones that roll off early on.

Anyway, the maximum frequency cutoff isn't really the determiner of "quality" rather than being more associated with airiness or sharpness to sounds, partly why older people can't pick up locations of people that are coming up behind them. Cutting off the just the high end doesn't cut out all the distortion coming from the rest of the frequency spectrum.

I'd say most people don't get it because they haven't spent a longish period listening to good equipment, and a bit of training to hear for specific details. From my experience it just sounds... smoother? It's the only word I can find to describe it. For you, either you only listened to them casually for 5 minutes then just went "eh" or you're just fucked with the drumming and can't be helped (tinnitus is shit). Don't really know until you try.

I think once you make the initial jump in quality you notice, then you have diminishing returns. I've tried like 10 pairs now, up to my Audeze LCD-2 and as I worked up to them, the differences were subtle since I didn't own them all for any large amount of time. I have a pair of IEMs for being out/at work (dunu titan 1) that I love, but the longer I own those along side my LCD-2s, the more I notice the difference in quality.

Long story short, it really just depends how far you wanna go/how much you wanna spend, but getting at least to the m50 level I think is the way to go.

straight up he-400s and a nice ~$150 dac/amp are perfect if you aren't (hate to use the word desu) autistic and need to post on head-fi about how expensive your set up is. good for just about every genre, very lovely with electronic music because of how clear bass/sub bass is.

I thought I paid like $300 for my he-400 a few years back....but the 400s weren't out then. These guys make really great sounding cans if you are feeding them quality signal, otherwise there are better options.
