My arctic-themed ambient album. I tried to create soundscapes that would transfer the listener to a colder, frozen, isolated atmosphere; kind of like the cover art.

I really appreciate all types of criticism and even if you would just check it out for a minute or two.

i think you'd do yourself justice if you picked one sound to focus on and make an EP that fits together cohesively. all of the individual songs have potential within their own genre, but maybe you are trying to many things at once to really find your own sound, y'know?

does that make any sense?

i am positively fried right now so maybe my rantings only make sense to me

hey ur pretty cool too.

If The Bird Won't Sing is a really cute little song, really like the sort of dueling vocal harmony parts. I think your stuff would really benefit from filling out the mix with some more panning or other arrangements though . They're nice little songs, but they just sound a bit "empty" to me for whatever reason. Might just be the production (relistening to jupiter and mars has me rethinking this whole suggestion/criticism actually, but whatever), but either way I did enjoy it.
>>
>>64215937
Not to stir shit up from the last thread, but I looked at that one and found this before I saw this thread. To be blunt it seems to me like you think this album is way better than it really is, so I'm going to break this down for you. Really not trying to be pretentious but I've been playing instruments, singing, writing music and dabbling and recording for years and I want to help you out. You gave a whole lot to others so I'm going to give you a lot.

>Your guitar work
Pretty good. I like it. You know how to write some good riffs. Keep up the good work.

>your production/mixing/mastering

I know you were already told this, but it NEEDS to be mixed better. This will make it easier for you to get away with the lo-fi sound (if that's what you want to do ). I don't know what your financial situation is but look around the internet or locally to see where you can send your tracks to get mixed and mastered because the good qualities of your music are lost in the poor mixing.

If you don't want to sound so lo-fi anymore, get a better drum sim, a better amp sim, learn some basic EQ skills, watch some youtube tutorials for your amp/drum sims, get a better microphone. You can get all of this for free except for a decent mic, which for your needs, would run you like maybe $150. Browse the musiciansfriend stupid deals of the day.

>your lyrics
average...some good, some not so good. This only gets better with time and experience. If you mostly listen to metal/rock try to diversify your taste.

>Your vocals
You need to work on your Delivery AND your tone for your screams. The singing vocals are so drenched in effects that it's hard to tell what needs improvement but you can definitely kind of sing from what I can tell.

to be continued ->>
>>
>>64217262

>Your album art
for your next release, get someone else to do it. No offense if the guy who did it is a friend of yours. He's got potential, Although, while I'm not technically skilled with art, I do know art, and there's a few too many flaws in proportion/detail and it detracts from you establishing an aesthetic that allows you to be taken seriously.

>Your songwriting in general

musically, pretty unique. Not always particularly catchy or hooky but that's fine unless that's what you were going for. Your lyrics seem typical of metal sometimes, sometimes almost cliched, but not always.

Just keep up the work my man. This album was by no means awful but I know you have potential to do better.

>>64217989
As much as I love singer songwriter stuff, this is just some dude with a guitar singing about some sad stuff. Which does excite me in anyway, it's done time and time again.
Do something diffrent make your music, truly make it yours. I feel like with tracks like 'Nature...Lament' I get a very La Dispute feel! I recommend you listen to their Hear Here series, for inspo and kind of take notes of early Bright Eyes, Elliot Smith, and Daniel Johnston and try and incorporate those elements into your music.
>>64216591
Your music isn't bad but I feel like it's too amateur for me personally to me you come across as someone who grew up on Ye and Travis and decided "Hey i can do this." The vocals are way too far back in the mix, and the sampling grabs my attention more than the vocals which I can't even understand.
>>64216467
BEEF This is professionally done, I just don't get the beef thing.
>>64216527
Everything is still too rough and harsh for me to enjoy it, as someone who enjoys lo-fi this comes across as more noise. Listen to something like Hype Williams for inspiration and trying and build some new ideas off of that.
>>64216435
This is good but everything sounds so flat! Nothing has character to me really it just sounds like baby's first Garageband album. Like there are some good ideas on Japanese I'm just taken back by how average and boring every sound sounds.
>>64216417

>>64216333

listened to Aspartame and Sucralose
not sure what i expected, but this isn't it. this feels like the music that would play in the background of a movie when the MC is traveling through a dystopian desert. your voice is interesting. it manages to sound very calm while still having a lot of power behind it. reminds me of natural snow buildings in that way. i'd mark this at least as "slowcore/post-rock" because people have been rocking hate boners for ambient in the last few threads for some reason, and you deserve more exposure. rec.

I just got off of a shift at work and I'm really tired and would love to give this an in-depth response, but I'll sum up everything with this: thank you. It would be pretentious as fuck of me to deny the merits to everything you've said, judging on your candor and the nuance to every critique you've given, you seem to be very experienced and objective and it'd be foolish of me to not take it all to heart.

Lyrically, several of the pieces are borrowed from my dad's writing as an homage to him (like the title track), thought I'd clarify that.

I know this probably sounds defensive but my vocals are way better, with proper warmup, than this album leads on, listening through it I know there are plenty of moments where I just used the first take instead of being diligent, and there are even guitar parts that should have been re-done (the chorus riff in Recompense has audible string clicking and I feel stupid for allowing that now). I have a background in operatic singing and only Red Flags really shows that at all. So yes, in further releases I'll work on better delivery and tone for all vocals, harsh and clean. Diligence is what this album really needed, and it feels good to have that confirmed by someone who obviously knows what the fuck they're talking about.

I'm not going to even think about recording more material until I get a better setup; this is just recorded with a practice amp, a USB mic, a cheap Yamaha keyboard, and drums in FL Studio. I see now from what you've said that I owe it to myself as a writer to be more diligent in terms of production.

Thank you man, sincerely.

I guess I did give a somewhat in-depth response. Fuck I'm so tired that I'm wired.

Cool to see you're still around. I did a few tracks with you roughly a year ago which you might remember.

I'd love to help produce or even just contribute some synth work to your next album. I've taken a step back from music and I now just collaborate.

Of course I remember, Dave, that was a lot of fun! I just wish I had put a better foot forward with some of that work, I feel like, in hindsight, I could have done better. I'd love to work with you again when I get my hands on a better setup, which should actually be soon considering the band I'm in, End Of Remembrance, is set to get some studio time as my bandmate Patty has just very recently informed me. I'll keep you posted, I still have you on FB, I think?

The tracks were pretty good I thought. The lyrics for the songs were perfect and I kept as much of the guitar work as I could.
I'm rarely on the FB these days, I'm on my SC more often

I can start checking my FB more regularly if that's easier for you?
