The acappella parts on 'Wind Chimes' where they are all going "wiiind Chimes are tinkalin" is on par with any choral music I've ever heard in terms of compositional ability and even singing ability.

Its a shame Brian never got around to being a full time composer for a church or something. He could have written some even more breath takingly God inspired works in that head space

Popular Music ≠ Music that is popular
>>64210727
He isn't anything close to a genious.
The closest thing Rock Music has gotten to a genious probably are Michael Gira, Frank Zappa and Fred Frith, but even them pale against real musical geniuses.
Now, if you include Jazz Music in Popular Music, then you have some real geniuses.

this is where i totally discarded your opinion. he just talked about songwriting. jazz has very little songwriting, and relies mostly on improvisation

because the only one on that list that even comes remotely close to brian is the beatles. in terms of songwriting. then radiohead (substantially lower). the rest are not even in the same universe. how can you say that bob dylan's 3 chord songs with super simple melodies are even close to brian or the beatles? we're not talking about lyricism. or kanye's looped soul samples?

As far as I know, Swans was the first band to wed Minimalism and Rock Music, specifically No-Wave, and they succeded at it.
Frank Zappa was the first one to blend Jazz and Rock, even before Miles Davis, created Progressive Rock; and succeded at both.
Fred Frith basically made a rock themed british free improvisation band, also succeded at it.
>>64211337
Jazz has created several more and better masterpieces than rock music.

dude you know nothing about songwriting or theory if you think that. paul and john and brians songs (mostly talking about their later works with the beatles and the beach boys, '65-'67ish) were simple.

strawberry fields, penny lane, god only knows, they all were super complex. non-diatonic chords, modulations, jazz theory (brian), bob dylan literally wrote 3 chord folk music. and i'm not saying its objectively worse, but it's objectively not as complex or musically inventive as the beatles/beach boys
>>
>>64211622

i guess i made that up. in that case i agree that jazz had a lot of geniuses, but it's a very different kind of genius.

also you're just naming things that those bands did first. who cares? i could name a shitload more that did way more influential things than the bands you listed, it doesn't make them geniuses. also in what universe is swans "popular music"
>>
>>64211707
come on dude the beatles can absolutely hold a candle to brian. i personally don't think they're better but they can hold a candle to him
>>
>>64211275

This opinion is incorrect. You got fooled into thinking that Jazz was "more intellectual" and "more sophisticated" than even Nickelback buttrock, which it isn't.

"Scholars have classified music as popular based on its mode of transmission in non-written form, its appeal to diverse listeners, its treatment as a commodity in a capitalist context, and other factors."
>I could name a shitload more that did way more influential things than the bands you listed
I'm not talking about influence, but about uniqueness for their time, with sounds that evolved while still being unique. besides that I can just say I enjoy them and consider them to have solid discographies.
>>64211737
It dosen't matter which music is more "intellectual" or more "sophisticated", music is about conveying the same emotions in different, unique ways; which jazz has plenty.

it has songwriting, but way less than most other genres. especially seeing as it's super common to take standards and redo them, or to take melodies from pop music and put them into a jazz context

I genuinely think Elliott was just as talented as Brian Wilson his arrangements weren't super original until the FABOTH sessions but his music is pretty goddamn impeccable and even as far back as Roman Candle his guitar work was crazy
