I try to be an unpretentious, unbiased music listener and give everything a fair try. If you are wondering why I rated a "good" album/track so low then it might be because I rate the more musical aspects much more highly than say lyrics, production values, culture, image, classiness, etc. My music ratings are allocated as follows for tracks:
0.5: Really bad or not really music
1: Bad
1.5: Average
2: Quite tolerable
2.5: Kind of like it
3: Like it but wouldn't listen to it again
3.5: Like it but I'm not sure if I'll listen to it again
4: Like it and will listen to it again one day
4.5: Like it and will listen to it again
5: Really like it

For albums I have a different scoring system and I also give out bonuses depending on the distribution of 4/4.5/5 star tracks there are, otherwise some albums would score too unfairly low. I'm not going to try to make a nice bell curve for the sake of it. I'll let the distribution of ratings reflect the fact that I find the average piece of music worth so much less than one that I really like.
I also rate each track by the best part, so a track that is mostly bad but has a good ending will have a rating that is higher than the average quality of the various parts within the track. A track may also have multiple parts rated so it may not be so obvious how an album's rating is calculated.
Musical segments that are repeated or good covers that are not noteworthy enough may not be rated or may result in a misleading rating that only rates an original portion of the track. I usually omit live recordings.
For singles, I may ignore a B-side in the rating if it is better than the A-side because I don't want people being misled into thinking that the rating represents my rating of the A-side, or I may give a rating that is closer to an average.
Hopefully my comments will help to clear anything up. I'm refraining from long reviews because I'm not trying to sway people's opinions. I'm just getting straight to the point and showing people the music if they feel it like I do because the music should speak for itself. I might one day write some longer reviews for stuff that I think is genuinely worth writing about. If you think you understand my taste and you think I've overlooked a track/album then feel free to let me know. I try to listen to everything twice or more but there may be some music that I'll like if I listen to it more.
By the way, I've actually heard a lot. It might be a long time before I reveal a lot of my favorite artists and songs though. Just trying to get through the more popular stuff first.
