Although I love Hendrix, calling him the 'best' guitarist doesn't seem right? For me, 'best guitarist' denotes being the most technically versatile and proficient at playing guitar. Guys like Guthrie Govan comes to mind for me...
Greatest on the other hand, I think it's undeniable that he is the single greatest guitarist so far. No other character in history has changed society's and musician's perspectives of what 'playing guitar' actually means. His influence is unsurpassed, even if he was notoriously sloppy etc.

There is no objective way to rate people on their level
But if one could indeed be made, it would be how connected their Creative Source(Ideas,composition, harmonic and melodic sense) is to their Output(technical proficiency, their actual playing)
In which case Jimi and John Frusciante have be unsurpassed.
This doesn't stop people like Guthrie Govan from people impossibly good guitarists, he himself has a great sense of melody and harmony. and technically blows everyone out of the water

He was the best in terms of his lasting impact on music. It's worth mentioning that no one was played like, or heard the kind of shit Jimi was experimenting with. Sure he's a badass guitar player, with freaky large cherokee voodoo hands, but I think his greatest purpose/gift was being a pioneer of contemporary rock and blues music. Pushing the boundaries of what could be done.

The thing is, I don't think we've ever seen a guitarist push guitar playing boundaries as far as him in popular music since him. There have been people who have come after him who can play faster or use more effects that Jimi, but none that can use their techniques as creatively as Hendrix. His level of creativity is what makes him one of the greatest of all time imo, and the fact that this creativity has yet to be matched or beat improves his standing.

Agreed. I think his lonely and troubled childhood played a large part in that. Locking himself away and playing music all the time. A sort of escape that he made into his own reality. Frankly, I think it's really beautiful how it all turned out.
