Nirvana were never played 'grunge' music and was only labeled that categorically. They were exclusively punk/noise rock incorporating melody into their songs - which is what made their songs catchy.
In 50 years, people will still be wearing Nirvana shirts and Cobain would've still been the last rockstar to ever live. Meanwhile, people still struggle to identify the band members of Oashit.
Both are responsible for the awful state of rock music post-2000, so neither.
Objective opinion:
Oasis > Alice in Chains > Smashing Pumpkins = Soundgarden > Shit (Grunge/Britpop)
