I need some help. I'm working on DAW for the first time (Ableton) and I'm really displeased with the "quality" of the sound I get.

I've knowledge on music theory and stuff, I've been playing piano for 10 years now, so that's not the matter. I talk about the quality of the instruments which are available is pretty bad... I don't know it's like the sounds that I get lack depth and warmth.

What do you do to get quality sound? Do you sample everything and go on with it? Do you get new instruments? Is there a way to make the instruments which come by default with ableton sound better?

>TL;DR Instruments in ableton sound like shit
>>
>>64186042
instruments in ableton are absolute trash
you gotta get yourself some vsts m8
>>
>>64186042
get kontakt and some good libraries and the korg legacy colelction and whatever other softsynths look appealing to you, i dont even remember the last time i used a default ableton instrument
>>
>>64186069
Vsts stands for Virtual Instruments, right? (Excuse me, but I'm completely new to this world).

I tried to download a few some days ago, every single of them was made for Windows 32 bits, which kicked me in the nuts. All the instruments that I found for 64 bits were expensive as hell...

>>
>>64186160
>Vsts stands for Virtual Instruments, right?
virtual studio technology, but that's essentially what they are. like the other guy said, torrenting them first to see which ones you like (or if you're gonna stick with music production at all, for that matter) is advisable
>>
>>64186208
Is there any problem puting your music on public websites such as Soundcloud if they're made with ilegal software?
I mean, like a frequency hidden on your tracks which can be percepted by machines or some shit.
Do I sound as paranoid as I think?

>>64186296
yeah you'll be fine man don't worry about that
i've been doing it for years nothings ever happened to me and ive never heard of it happening to anyone else
>>
>>64186233
I feel like it lacks a main melody on top of that. It could be a good base but I wouldn't last very long listening only that.
>>
>>64186296
actually lots of the more expensive kontakt patches (spitfire f.e.) have some sort of shaped noise that enables the manufacturer to read out some data from your tracks, I guess some cracked versions deal with this but I know that they're constantly improving their stuff in that regard
but no one cares about soundcloud tracks with 600 plays, so you're fine
>>
>>64186296
I can understand the paranoia but no, there's nothing that will fuck you over from the audio, just due to how audio works. It's fine. Besides faggots like Martin Garrix and SHM have been seen using torrented software and nothing happens

Go to your downloads, you'll be moving the vst file to your library-audio-plugins. Keep in mind that on Mac there are two "library" folders. One is hidden for newer version of OS X. One is above user so system and the other is library. Go to your home, press CMD and the UP arrow at the same time until you get to the top of the directory and go from there.

I had this problem when I needed ableton for some work. I avoid it usually but had to use it

When I downloaded the vst yesterday, it came with an installation and a code cracker (or whatever they're called) to let me put in a serial

Same thing happened when I installed a program called Soundflower, I couldn't find the app even after I installed it twice.
>>
>>64186618
>Soundflower
I use that.
I just appears as an audio device. Nothing to really open.
>>
>>64186618
Oh that's what you meant, not the directory, the vst will be accessed through ableton, not as an app. Open ableton and then within ableton go to the plugins and open from there.

Sound flower never worked great for me

>>
>>64185241
yeah, trance

usually a basis of a good trance track involves a 2 to 4 chord progression that plays throughout with compression sidechain by the kick. lowpass the chords during the verse, open up the filter during the chorus.

>>
>>64185219

>>
>>64186925
I do installations somewhat frequently.

A current project of mine is making a "jet simulator" where I use a Wacom tablet to control the panning and indexing of a sample cloud. The pen buttons fire the guns and missiles, which are samples of people making gun and missile noises. The score is a sort of "flight plan" that the performer must follow that gives indication of how they need to turn, and how much they need to throttle the engine as well as when they need to shoot an enemy plane and fire missiles at a target. The throttle controls the grain index of a jet engine sample to achieve the sound of different speeds.

Basically like a video game without a screen.

typically 909 kits, juno/303 bass lines, disco guitar/vocal snips, accompanied by short arpeggiated note patterns. House focuses more on repetition and variation of these elements (essentially muting on and off the short looping parts).

Unlike trance or techno, house music doesn't use long evolving parts or melodic crescendos.

Mr Brightside was a quick thing that i'm not exactly happy with but the musicians didn't quite nail their parts and it's all we had time for so i mixed it with my buddy later on. They played pretty sloppily which was a shame since we recorded the vocals with a sontronics tube mic, the helios, everything was going through Neve pre-amps and an ssl desk and the guitarist either used one of my gibsons or schecters, can't remember. Just a pity really, could have been so much more punchy. Not happy with it at all to be honest. I can do better.

oh okay, well it's almost a supersaw in the terms of how detuned it sounds, i mean i'm drunk as anything but i would say a few saw wave ocillators with a filter cutting out some of the high end would be a good start, these things take a lot of tweaking, i've gone away from musical synthesis and more into foley/sound design so i'm not the ideal person to ask. I would say some saw waves with a low pass filter at around 10khz at the highest, some slight detune and somethign like that.

okay so i'm liking the intro.
Really don't like the kick at all, or whatever that's meant to be. the whole pitching bouncy sound is a bit too much. you're right it sounds messy as fuck.

I'd have a more kick like kick, but maybe that's just me.

What demo are you trying? or is that some sample..?

The fading in infinite clap is cool.

Seriously though, the bouncing up and down synth is actually really pissing me off.

I think you need more layers, even if they're nearly identical to current instruments playing but just with a little distortion, some extra compression and layered quietly, something like parallell compression but with synth patches instead.

Personally i didn't like any of that track.

It needs work on both synthesis and production. The main synth is obnoxious and fucking annoying as hell, maybe try to decrease the ranges on the synth so it's not jumping about quite so much. Kick could do with being different and there's not enough layers, layer, compress, filter.

sorry if this isn't terribly useful, not my genre and i'm not exactly awake and alert.
>>
>>64192044
>https://clyp.it/lxzj1qf3
not sure. i like it that's for sure, reminds me of random album title. (That's some serious fucking praise bitch)

I'm not sure about the seemingly sidechained string section, doesn't feel "right".

Glitchy instrument about halfway is nice, just layer a dirty version under it to give it a little grit and presence.

Drum beat is pretty cool. It's good stuff, definitely an improvement on what you had earlier.
>>
>>64192050
Well thank you alot.
In fact the pitching bouncy sound is a 909 with a flanger.
I don't really know how to use distortion or comrpression (also are ableton native one nice enough ?)

The kick is a techno kick from a sylenth vst
>>
>>64192050
>>64192154
909 snare*
>>
>>64192108
thanks man!
that sidechained string is just some synth pad
do you have any suggestions as to what to replace it with? the song is kind of lost without it
>>
>>64192154
>>64192180
I use sylenth1 on occassion. the thing with compression is that often less is more unless you're doing parallel compression.

I would reccomend that you read up on both corrective compression and "new york compression". Since one is to give a more balanced signal and the other is a technique to add weight, character and body to a sound. If you don't understand compression at all then don't start with the new york technique. Look up videos and lessons on compression within mixing.

Also with distortion, what i meant is that alongside new york compression, distortion can really add a lot to a sound when used carefully.

say you had a lead bassline, you would take your bassline, compress and eq to make it fit and then do the following
>buss to an aux which you crush with a compressor
>apply a light distortion to the aux to give a bit of dirt
>layer this on the edge of being audible to add a little fatness.

i've been drinking to celebrate finishing some work with friends and i've had fuck all sleep so sorry if this doesn't make much sense.

>>64192293
what synth?

You could always put a few of the same patch together, of course with minor differences, like a slight tiny weenie amount of detune or split the strings into say... 3 channels. the lower notes in the centre and the higher notes panned out left and right. I did an old track around 5 years back that had around 7 tracks of a very similar synth patch layered with a tiny bit of white noise. (here it is, https://clyp.it/5cejhymr skip to around 1min)Each channel however was slightly different, can't remember how but i had the lower end more central and highs panned out hard. Maybe it was a case of slightly different effects and pitching

layering and compression are vital in making your work sound professional and fat.
>>
>>64191281
oh my god i love Objekt

Detune, use weird waveforms, figure it out lol
>>
>>64192603
the synth as a preset off of serum i tweaked a bit

2 threads in a row, i'll bet you feel like quite the special guy
>>
I've asked this a couple of other times in this thread, and I've never received an answer.

There's this odd choir/wavetableish sound at 3:38 in this song. How the hell do I get that?

too easy senpai

How can I route (don't know if that's the right Word tbf) which vst effects for guitar to get a shoegaze sound?
Also what are the best vst guitar effects in your opinion?

Does anyone want to make a Giles Corey mashup with me? I'll add your emails to my google drive & we can upload the clips that hit us the most.

Not at all what I'm talking about. I'm wholly convinced that /prod/ is full of noobs and you're an exceptional example of it.
>>
How the fuck do I learn arrangement? I haven't finished anything in ages.
>>
thoughts?

>>64198812
just practice it. learn what you want to automate or edit. cutting and splicing wav files or midi files is a matter of what you want.
>>
>>64184870
>>64179734
Where do you learn to maxmsp? Computer engoneering?
>>
>>64200074
Second this, but for PureData. Where'd you start with Pd? Will I be learning/practicing for like 5 years before I can build patches? Is the ability to build patches exactly how you want them worth the learning curve, or should I just suck it up and use the millions of plugins already out there?
>>
>>64198701
this fuckin guy comin in here asking how to get one of the most commonly available sounds and then getting butthurt about "noobs"
>>
>>64193130
Been doing it 6 years and just finishing my BSc in audio technology in a. Few weeks
>>

I learn both as a tiny part of my degree. However there's insane amounts of tutorials out there online for both and the learning curve isn't too extreme once you get your head wrapped around it

this guy has amazing max tutorials, which I've really found helpful in learning, also there are some decent tutorials in the software itself

Side note this is a little project I've been working on, its a glove that I use with MAX for controlling live sound effects/building drones. Ideas for what I could do with it?
>>
>>64201539
Nice, think about mapping parameters to midi commands for your soft synths. I used a leap motion to control different parameters in sylenth1. So x-axis was pitch, y was cutoff filter controller and z was note length.

Steve Duda's, Sadowick's, SeamlessR's and a bunch of others.
Good videos on Serum are easy to find.

Lots of contemporary composers use it to control electronics for pieces for X instrument and electronics.

This kind of thing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IV0GPBYRi24&list=PLFd5hU9XSNHtWamTNiU_nuRksxlnBBGYl

There was a really cool video where max controlled all the lights and effects for an ensemble and they were illuminated from darkness when they played. It was very effective, but I can't remember the name of it.

The best way to learn how to mix an orchestra is to learn how to do it irl. Orchestras are massive and have huge varieties and combinations available. Really you want to read a book on orchestration and study some scores of Brahms, Mahler, Mozart, Ravel, etc.
Once you know how an orchestra works, then it becomes much easier to make it work in a DAW.

I guess if you want a quick and dirty guide to mixing orchestra, look up the seating arrangement of an orchestra and use that as a guide to your stereo mix.

A lot of orchestral writing is about "blending" the different part of the orchestra together. The woodwind and the brass section can be blended together with things like bassoon in high register and clarinets in low register. Chord spacing and doubling can be hugely effective in orchestral writing. Look at some scores and you'll see how composers use only a few lines of music, but doubled throughout the orchestra to create a full sound.
Orchestration is a real art and it tends to be unique to each individual. DAW orchestras dont really do it justice.

I wasn't talking about the bass doing the 3 over 4 thing. Read the post you're replying to. There's way too much motion going on for just a simple 2 pole filter.

Before you act all high and mighty, THINK about what I'm actually asking, instead of just assuming I want the most simple sound in the song.

Fucking scuba, I swear.

He has a point, /prod/ is pretty dumb when it comes to production. That, and you clearly have no idea what he was talking about, because that "most commonly available sound" you're talking about was present throughout the whole song. Either shut up and take the shame, or continue to throw a temper tantrum to prove how much this general sucks.

>>64194376
My best suggestion is to try and find a choir wavetable in whatever plugins you have that have wavetables. They're pretty tricky to copy.
>>
>>64186042
Compress, equalize the instruments then master the track and stop being a bitch.
>>
https://clyp.it/ocxpms0e

Any advice on the mix / master? Sounds a bit hazy to me at times.
>>
>>64204985
no you're an asshole the instruments in ableton are atrocious
>>
>>64205413
>https://clyp.it/ocxpms0e
bring the drums up a few db
sidechain the instruments to the kick
put a multiband compressor on the master
put a limiter on the master
>>
>>64205484
Thanks! Gonna try it. I've got limiter on but feels like I can't really go nuts with it.
>>
>>64204673
>to prove how much this general sucks.
feel free to leave any time, son
>>
>>64205666
Or you could just post your emulation of the sound using a 2 pole filter or shut up.
>>
>>64205666
Hey man, at least you can admit that you're some next level idiot.
>>
>>64205814
>>64205834
Not even the guy you were replying to before, I just think that if you don't like a general but stay in it, you're a moron.
>>
>>64205868
All I was saying is that he should stop acting like a smug idiot if I call him out on his bullshit. It's not my fault you came in late and don't even understand what's going on.

Maybe you shouldn't say

if you don't want people to think you think the general sucks, captain autismo.

My point is that if you get called out for being wrong, there's no reason to keep arguing about it, like you're doing now. When did I say I was going to leave because of it?

hi /prod/, is anyone here in a record label? if so, does being in a label (considering it's a small one) provide any significant advantage over releasing on bandcamp?
>>
>>64208638
I am, it's pretty good not having to worry about distribution at all, having the support of your label mates and management. Besides, when the label does something together, it's a blast as well.
>>
>>64208767
Sup Ryuno.
>>
>>64208821
You're right this time, but I'm pretty sure there are other signed /prod/ lurkers.
