That's definitely good in some aspects but never practicing without a metronome is like never learning to ride a bike without training wheels.

Any fans of fucking werewolf asso here? VERY drum focused group, which is kinda surprising, because the drummer plays a 3 piece set.

Electric or acoustic kit for starting out? Taking drum lessons and getting a bit sick of the practice pad/pillow/foot tapping set up..

I like how small and quiet electric kits are, but i want to able to work on hi hat splashes and stuff, and as far as i know with most electric kits, the hat pedal only has an open/closed function..
I know you can make acoustic kits quiet with sound off pads, but they take up a lot of room too, and my current situation means i wouldnt be able to play much during the day (with the sound off pads off)

Any thoughts?
>>
>>64178773
Use a pad for starting out, then acoustic
>>
Just added up how much my desired gear will cost:
$1900
DW Maple Kit, bunch of cymbals, and then even MORE when I bring in hardware costs.

What a fucking expensive hobby.

DW Collector's Series, White Marine Pearl - 10, 12, 14, 16 ,22. Pictured is a custom all brass 14 x 6 snare I had made. I also have a 14 x 5 Black Beauty and a 13 x 6.5 Craviotto solid shell.

Cymbals:
8" A Series splash
13" Armand hats
15" Constantinople crash
17" K Hybrid crash
17" A Series crash
20" K Custom ride
21" K Custom dry ride
22" K ride

Wishlist includes some larger, really thin hats and a 24" ride. Been playing about 12 years now.

>>
>>64187065
Stick control is for every level of drummer. Buy and make it your bible. Find ways to apply it to the set. Something I do and I know a lot of people do it put the r and l stickings to the snare and bass drum. So r l r l r l r l r l r l r l r l becomes snare kick snare kick snare kick etc over a jazz cymbal pattern (1 2 a 3 4 a 1...) and all the notes are eight notes. So you're playing on every eighth-note partial.

Ou can also keep the jazz beat, (don't forget hihat on two and four) and play the stick control patterns as quarter note triplets over the 4/4 jazz pattern. It gets really funky once you hit paradidle quarter note triplets over your standard ride beat. It's a great mind fuck and forces your to learn some impractical coordination that ultimately makes you better as a drummer.

That's only like $3000 if he was buying shit super expensive from the local GC, liberal numbers. 1k for drums and 1k for cymbals and maybe 500-1k for hardware.
That's really nothing considering you'll be using it forever until you sell it. Heads will get expensive over time, though.
>>
>>64186458
1. Listen to acdc on headphones
2. Play along with the acdc on the headphones

Substitute a current band with basic beats with acdc if you hate acdc. This will improve your time and help you develop rhythm. This is for total beginners though.

I've got some stagg vintage bronze hats (~200) a 22in med byzance ride (~375) and a 20in byzance hand hammered crash (~350) which came out to just shy of 1k. Got a gretsch Catalina maple which was only like 600bucks and hardware I stole from school and only really had to buy a throne (150) and a snare stand another 120 bucks.

I really want a better kit but with school and the hours required to put in I have no hours available for a job outside of little bar gigs I do 1 - 4 times a week and depending on the week can bring me as little or as much as 20 - 500bucks.
The average week is like 150 - 200 bucks. I need to get out of school and find a solid gig somewhere.
>>
>>64187225

The shells were bought used from a Guitar Center for $2500, and that included the necessary hardware to set it up (floor tom legs, double tom stand). The snares are about $600 each. All the cymbals were bought new so that's somewhere around $2100. Not a bad deal overall, considering a DW Collector's Series bass drum alone is like $1500 new.

You will need microphones to record the drums. Or you could play everything at once.

ooh i hope these threads become a regular thing!

how do i work on separating my left foot from my right foot? i've only had an operational hi-hat pedal for about a half a year and i'm not really accustomed to it.

>>64186458
you'll probably want to learn the single stroke roll, then work your way to double stroke rolls. there's a lot of cool stuff you can do if you're good with double strokes.

start at what ever BPM you are comfortable with 8th notes in RLRL or RRLLRRLL, then do 16ths in the same routine
>>
>>64187225

Na...don't think so hombre...DW's are expensive new, less so used. A typical 4pc DW is $4000 new. Hardware is extra...and that can get expensive real fast. Cymbals, totl stuff, can run you easily $400 to $600 each.
The last cymbal I bought new, in Feb of this year, an 18" Paiste Rude china, was $388 out the door...

Anyone have experience with the speed cobra hi hat stand? I'm going to buy Meinl Byzance Dark hats and need a good stand for it, my pdp 700 (iirc) is a piece of shit that I should have sent back. Looking for good crash stands as well, I like the tama boomstand, believe it's roadpro.
>>64190400
I've found DWs for $700 in maple (5 piece). I made my Fender Starcaster kit sound like a nice 70s kit with just a few onyx heads and a new snare (blackrolite) you can make anything sound good with mixing and good heads and tuning. My acrolite was $70, the kit was $5.
