What's the deal with Schubert? Everyone goes on about him yet I've only heard one thing from him that I liked and most of the other works seem boring or just like second-rate in comparison to his contemporaries. Am I missing something here?
>>64169766

>>64170878
I'd add his 8th symphony to that list.
I think The Rite of Spring might be the greatest piece of music ever composed. Is this an unreasonable thing to think having only heard it once?
>>64171213
depends on what else you've heard. it's definitely the best ballet and modern classical piece ever. dunno if it could ever beat other pieces for me however
>>64171256
By Stravinsky or in general?
>>64171283
just in general. as far as stravinsky goes petroushka and firebird are real great too naturally
>>64170997
>tfw Schubert may have actually completed his 8th and Hüttenbrenner lost the last 2 movements
>>64171428
Yeah, I was reading through his wikipedia and I figured I'd go to Firebird next after spending some more time listening to TROS
I'm more a jazz fan than a classical fan and I'm still pulling from really huge acclaimed composers and pieces when I'm looking for new classical but I've heard a decent amount. I've no doubt there's a lot of essential stuff I haven't heard that I'll love but TROS just hit me like nothing else I've ever heard.
>>64171213
It's not unreasonable. But if you're new to classical you may eventually change your mind as you explore other masterpieces.
>>64171535
If you're more used to jazz you'd probably like Ravel, Debussy, and Satie as well.
>>64171566
Debussy is bae. He was one of the first composers I gravitated to because of the influence he had on Bill Evans. I'd gone for a lot of his piano work but I was out at a performance of Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun two or three weeks ago and I really enjoyed it. You can hear how he'd written loads of it on piano, the way he had the harps playing chords it was like you could hear his style for left hand piano. I'll give those other two a go, I like French people.
>>64171558
I sure hope so. Finding music I enjoy this much semi-regularly would be nice.

Who /wagner/ here?
I recently bought a DECCA label called "Wagner: Favourite Overtures" as a driving album.
The overture from Tannhauser is quite possibly my personal favorite Romantic-Era composition. The theme from Pilgerchor as played by a strong brass section sends shivers down my spine.

Yes. I like Kocsis for his waltzes though.
I'm in my office and there are road construction workers right under my window making huge noises.

Klemperer why is your Mahler 7 so damn slow
what were you on man
>>64183148
No doubt Klemperer was a master,
But surely Mahler played it faster,
Lasting forty minutes past an hour,
With intonation that's often sour,
Poor Otto's Seventh is a real disaster.

Huh, Dorati's Brahms seems a lot better than I remember. Urgent and well balanced. Hell, you can even hear the contra-bassoon properly where you're supposed to.
why is baroque music so fucking bad?
why is it so boring?
why would i rather listen to medieval church chants than bach?
why was the harpsichord so popular?
didn't they know it sounds awful?
>>64186760

Hey guys. I'm relatively new to classical etc etc
I've listened to several Beethoven piano sonatas performed by Wilhelm Kempff. I loved his Mondschein and Waldstein, but Apassionata and Hammerklavier were a mixed bag. I like some movements, but some other leave me completely cold. So, could you recommend me some other good (better?) Beethoven sonata interpreters?
>>64190783
Schnabel, Solomon, Richter, Nat, Fischer(s), Hungerford, Hofmann (on good days), Yudina, Rosen, Backhaus, Levy, Michelangeli, Sofronitsky, etc.
Generally speaking the Schnabel set is probably the most consistently interesting of all complete sets. You'll find more often than not though that singular performances from a variety of interpreters are sometimes more interesting than their (or other's) complete sets. Just explore around, really.
