I'm a total prog-rock noob but I heard this album the other day for the first time and I love it. What are some essential prog rock albums to check out? Doesn't necessarily have to be super similar to this one, but it's cool if it is
try this
>>64167829
Foxtrot by Genesis
>>64167829
IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING

>>64167829
Obviosly Pink Floyd: animals, dsotm, wosh you were here, meddle - there are probably more
>>64167829
I've really been feeling this album lately. This along with King Crimson's output.
Obligatory
secretly the best Yes album coming through
>>64167920
>not meddle
>>64167969
>not tarkus
>>64167990

>>64168016
Shame emersons hand shit the bed on him
>>64167990
Meddle is a great pick for Pink Floyd since Echoes is king of tracks
Tarkus is not as good as Brain Salad Surgery, though (Bitches Crystal from Tarkus is however the best short ELP track)
>>64168028
also check Ommadawn, platinum and taurus 1 and taurus 2
is styx prog?
if you like Yes, then listen to The Yes Album, Relayer and Fragile (secretly their best).
For other symphonic prog listen to Mirage by Camel, In the Court of the Crimson King by King Crimson, Selling England by the Pound by Genesis and Per un amico by Premiata Forneria Marconi. Also, self-titled by ELP.
>>64168080
also yessongs is an incredibly underrated and great live album.
the live version of close to the edge is arguably better than the studio
>>64167829
OP just listen to all Yes albums from The Yes Album to Going for the One. They are all pretty awesome.
The other most significant popular prog rock band is King Crimson, who you should check out from 1969 to 1981. Amazing band with amazing variation of styles.
>>64167920
This would probably be too strange for a newcomer to prog. Good shit though.
>>64167969
Yea I would say this one is one of the weaker ELP releases, they made some better stuff in the following albums.
>>64167990
Yea he should rec Meddle I think it is better for a newcomer plus it has PF's best song.
>>64168080
This guy has pretty good idea of where to go next. Although I think most people think Fragile is the best Yes album or at least the most popular.
>>64167829
this and Ommadawn
Check this out after you're done with the entry level albums
or might as well jump right into it
so here's a Finnish national broadcasting corporation studio recording from 1973 that was just released roughly a week ago for the first time after the initial radio broadcast - it's a completely awesome slice of instrumental Canterbury Sceneish prog led by guitarist Jukka Tolonen - two tracks, 39 minutes - the 22 minute version of Ramblin is just mindblowing
it's available on Spotify at least, seek it out somewhere
here's another live version of Ramblin' from 1972 Pori Jazz Festival

>>64168078
Pieces of Eight is an amazing record
>>64168073
Ommadawn is actually the best Mike Oldfield album
also everyone who is a fan of Oldfield's should check out bassist Pekka Pohjola's Keesojen Lehto / Mathematician's Air Display / Skuggornas Tjuvstart (it was released with different names in different markets) with Oldfield on guitar and co-producing

I'll check it out
>>64168395
thanks for the suggestion, im gonna check it out
>>64168395
based pohjola
Must add Rush classics… My favorites are Moving Pictures, Subdivisions and Power Windows
>>64168556
Grace Under Pressure too is totally underrated.
2112 for obvious reasons.
UK - Danger Money
Jon Anderson - Olias of Sunhillow
Eloy - Ocean
3 recent favorites of mine I'm sure you'll also enjoy OP
Also listen to all of Gentle Giants work up to The Missing Piece.
>>64167829
>>64168259
Is this prog? I always thought of it as fusion.
Where's the line between them?
King crimsons
>>64169291
haha
>>64169764
It isn't prog, though many progheads adore it (me being one of them). It's definitely a jazz rock fusion album.
>>64169859
Whats wrong with Tool? Besides their fanbase
>>64167829
Genesis - Foxtrot
Genesis - Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
Jethro Tul - Aqualung
Gentle Giant - Octopus
Big Big Train - Underfall Yard
Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream
Steven Wilson - Raven that Refused to Sing
Steven Wilson - Hand Cannot Erase
Gazpacho - Demon
Dredg - El Cielo
Some of my favorites in no real order. Big Big Train is like classic style prog, the others are modern prog.
>>64171970
*Everything above Big Big train is classic style prog I mean.
>>64170817
I find they're way too repetitive. Which to me is a funny complaint considering I'm a big fan of Can. Not enough variation. Symphonic prog and kraut rock are the real stars.
>>64170817
This >>64172458
and mindless drones who love their Pitchfork reviews.
>>64171970
>Gazpacho - Demon
mah negroid
Selling England by the pound.
#1 best prog album ever.
