to expand on my thoughts, let me first begin by saying that I ADORE Rollercoaster. Despite my favourite Kozelek song being on DCH, Rollercoaster remains my favourite album of his.
HOWEVER, Down Colorful Hill is easily the superior artistic achievement. With the exception of the long ballads and litanies, the songs on Rollercoaster are far more traditional and straightforward in their delivery. The music is a lot more comparable to the peers of their time, going with the true-and-tested formula of the typical songwriter. Despite Kozelek's lyricism still being some of the strongest ever, the impact is not nearly as powerful as DCH's because of the more predictable delivery.
Instead, Down Colourful Hill presents each of its six songs as an individual monument, each a monster of originality and imaginative songwriting. These songs are each soft whimpers and prolonged sighs.
The music is reduced to an absolute minimum and sung in the voice of a sleepwalker. The creations are mantras, confessional texts that slowly sink into an abysmal depression. The ten-minute Medicine Bottle does not grant revenge against fate, but rather, little by little, takes the meaning and vitality out of life.
The guitar curls an endless series of softly melodic agreements, as if it is almost afraid to stop the agony of the rhythm and the song. This track, more than any, harks to the dark lamentations of Morrissey. Songs such as 24 are about as happy as the prayers of a dying man, yet are still fantastic.
The title track rises to almost martial rhythm, seemingly in hope of redeeming all of the pain which is infused into the other songs. The maximum excitation is found on Lord Kill the Pain, which is the only track that is filled with music to any extent, mixing in a little folk rock and a bit of Lou Reed.
Rollercoaster was Mark's most poetic work, but Down Colorful HIll, naive, innocent, broken, reminas his most original and artistic achievement.
