What have you been listening to? What'd you think of it? General jazz discussion.

I've been listening to pic related a lot. I love this quintet combo with trombone and vibes. Would also appreciate some post-bop recs.

the more adventurous Jackie McLean albums are pretty much all great - I'm a really big fan of the track Love and Hate on this one, I love Hutcherson's vibes on it

I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here, but if you like this sort of McLean and don't know Grachan Moncur III's Blue Note albums Evolution and Some Other Stuff you just HAVE TO check them out
>>
>>64162786
Evolution is also one of my favorite jazz albums. I'll check out Some Other Stuff.
>>
>>64163527
I'll also recommend his BYG Actuel albums Aco Dei de Madrugada and New Africa while I'm at it

Also Archie Shepp's album Kwanza has IMHO the best version of the title track of New Africa with Moncur on trombone that's well worth checking out afterwards

as for myself, my order of Nik Bärtsch's Mobile latest album Continuum on ECM came in today so I'm now listening to that - still on the first side of the double-LP, but sounds like a great slice of modern electronica influenced minimalistic European jazz

And another great album with the same lineup. Even though I prefer Extended Play.

And here is an amazing live set from the same quintet.

in related, did someone actually enjoy Holland's Prism -project?

I saw them live and seriously the highlight was hearing Kevin Eubanks play some blues licks - I expected a little better than Jay Leno's talk show band from the names involved (the album isn't much better)

incredibly comfy, love the tempo

I'm not much of a jazz listener. Could anybody just rec some background music for now, nothing to engaging but something that can get me into the genre more.

Another GOAT album.

its not background music thats the thing
>>
>>64165313
Fine foreground music then. I just want something that's less extended solo improv based and less free/avant-garde cause that's a lot of what gets posted on mu.

heavily arranged jazz might be a good idea... try charles mingus ah um maybe. or a totally different thing, modern jazz, lars danielsson liberetto 1
>>
>>64165508
Listening to Lars Danielsson now. Really liking it, thanks for the rec
>>
Im working on this song right now, the solo is pretty hard.

Do you guys skip alternate takes?

>>64165707
here's another track with the same name if you want to try fusion instead:

the only alternate takes i have listened to wwere on A Love Supreme. If i like the record a lot i'll listen to em
>>
>>64166008
If they're not already placed at the end of the album I always just re-order them to be at the end.

If you're going to listen to the entire album it interrupts the flow to hear the same tune twice but once you get pretty familiar with the music it can be really illuminating to listen to an alternate take to see what's different and what's the same about them.

I'm somewhat excited about Danielsson's upcoming trio album with Marius Neset on sax and Morten Lund on drums - Neset is pretty awesome

Reminder to come get involved in the /Blindfold Test/ threads every Friday. It's fun and a great way to discover/talk about jazz.

This week's theme is the criss cross record label.

>>
I've been exploring Criss Cross recently. Since you posted Destination Out, I'll add that Jackie's son René is a terrific player. He has a record called Watch Out with a really killer Sextet. Some really great players in the line up which are criminally overlooked.

>>64166008
There's a Wes Montgomery record which is a compilation of nothing but alternate takes. Honestly, it's some of the most tasteful soloing of heard from him.
>>
>>64166643
Watch Out is a great record but it's actually on SteepleChase rather than Cross Cross. Jackie McLean has some good ones on SteepleChase too and I think Rene plays on at least one of those.

seeing Chris Potter live next Saturday just after the /blindfold/-thread - I'll just say I'm disappointed if he doesn't make an appearance here

in addition to Potter, I'll be seeing Robert Glasper live for the first time at the same festival.

Here's Glasper's Radiohead-cover I quite enjoyed from his latest album:

pretty much - once I'm familiar enough with the "canonical" and like the album or track or players enough I'll check them out

Actually I don't. I don't even download it most of the time. I prefer the standard flow. But if I liked the record a lot, I'll check them a couple of times.
Pic related has a solid alt. take.

Chris Potter is fantastic. If you haven't listened yet, check out Reincarnation of a Love Bird by Paul Motian. You'll hear some amazing solos by a young Chris.
