Just because the entire city of Seattle collectively masturbates to Slanted & Enchanted doesn't mean they weren't a remarkable band. Compare what came before it and it was basically the perfect fusion of the noisier experiments of late 70s/early 80s post-punk and the more jangly sounding alt rock of the mid 80s. They managed to be a catchy rock band without sinking into snoozetastic banality or making wall to wall pussy "atmospheric" pop like 80% of the shit in every other /mu/ user's last.fm charts.
