Being possibly my favorite album, I usually like to interpret this album a bunch of ways. Currently, I see it as starting from depression and going through multiple failed attempts at happiness, ending with a sort of cliffhanger as to whether the protagonist has finally found such happiness, or will again slip into a depression

If I had to assign some sort of story to it, I always thought of it as someone goes on a cruise ship, it crashes, and then he gets lost at sea just slowly drifting away (physically and mentally). Maybe I've just seen the cover too many times.
Starts off happy, gets tense/uncomfortable/unfamiliar, ends melancholy.
