It's April 15th. Another day that we're all still alive. Oh boy.

Listen to your library, show off your backlog, revel about new music, tell us what you have been listening to today and what you will listen to in the following month, just let the good times flow.

What's /daily/ been listening to lately that's not on their backlog lately? I've been listening to this pretty much every day.

I should probably start a backlog or something, but I've just been really busy and shit.

I've loved math rock for a while now but never got much deeper than entry level stuff, so I've been working through this list in particular recently. I've got another couple lists to get through when I'm done.

Side note: I'm glad to see What Burns Never Returns on here over American Don. Honestly I think American Don is kind of boring in a lot of spots and wholly overrated.

The Fecking Bahamas make some killer math rock comps from around the world. I would strongly suggest trying those out

This EP is also killer if you like the more "twinkly" math rock.

I'll check that EP out too. Is the title just the file name?

I've heard onionoise. Sounds like minimal techno at times, it's really surprising how conventional an album only made with vegetables sounds.

Kek some guy said I smoked opium yesterday. I doubt it's true though, felt just like regular weed. I went to a hip hop show yesterday, but I forgot the rappers name. He played Happy Birthday for about half an hour and freestyled over it because it was the birthday of a girl in the audience he fancied.

>The Residents - Eskimo
Extremely minimal music, with a persiflage of inuit chants (I suppose as a critique on the way tribal cultures are depicted in the Western mainstream media) as the main attraction. The constant presence of the sounds of wind blowing, only breached by the occasional distant synth, percussion, or aforementioned chant, gives the album a very cold atmosphere. It is, therefore, one of the more unique and successful "ambient" albums out there, and while it does lack the immediacy of more expressive Residents albums, it's definitely worth checking out. 3.5-

>The Goslings - Grandeur of Hair
I should have listened to this sooner. Few noise rock records are this noisy and crushingly heavy as this one. The guitars sound colossal, crunching, and hypnotizing, but still carry enough melody to make it more than just racket. If I have one issue with the album, it's that the vocals aren't that amazing, but they're still decent enough and buried under so much noise that they don't distract too much. I just really like noise ok? 4.0+

>Ryuichi Sakamoto - Thousand Knives of Ryuichi Sakamoto
This really grew on me. This album is so much fun, navigating between a lot of different genres with the awesome sounds of early electronic/pop music. Unlike the few electronic music of the era I've heard, it doesn't sound boring and too new agey. Track 4 reminded me of Chun-Li's theme in SF2.
8-/10

>The Trees Community - The Christ Tree
Well, I'm such a harpfag I was bound to love this. The vocal harmonies were beautiful but sounded a bit too much like naive chistian music when there was no instrumentation behind. The variety of instruments and the frequent changes of mood are the album strengths. The shorter tracks which makes the tail of the album are a bit disappointing.
8+/10

This shit was pretty fun. A black metal album that's fast, furious, and absolutely hypnotic. The guitar and drumming are blended together to create this pulsating atmosphere while the vocals are sprinkled on just enough to add a brutal climax to the music.

Cult of Youth - Cult of Youth
This is a band to look out for; they're doing some sort of Irish folky Post Punk, but it's not quite there yet. It's very much like the pouges, but it doesn't have nearly as much piss and vinegar.
Would've liked it angrier

Colin Stetson - New History Warfare pt. 2: Judges
This dude has a set of lungs on him, very nice, I've only ever seen circular breathing employed in Didgeridoo players, it's really cool that it's been employed in such a way so as to create such a cool sound

>Professor Longhair - Crawfish Fiesta
Guess which genre this one is. Not especially rhythmic, decently catchy melodies otherwise. I know he was a pioneer to the genre in one way or another, but this one seems too straightforward for me to find exciting. I'm sure it would be fun live. 5/10

>Klaus Schulze - Timewind
"Bayreuth Return" is a spacey enough, but "Wahnfried 1883" takes it even further out. My issue with some Berlin School albums is that they haven't aged well or are boring or something, but this isn't too cheesy. Put this on with headphones and turn up the volume and it just may take you places. Pretty mind-blowing. 7.5/10

there are so many great ideas packaged together in this album, and i'm realizing glitch might be the perfect genre—seems like equal parts visceral and cerebral, like onkyo for the club. that paired with the progressive electronic of the later tracks make for a grand buzzing experience.

even when you aren't kidding, you talk out of a thesaurus like the edgy speech and debate kids at my high school who talk about Ayn Rand, make fun of kids for "knowing nothing about classical music," go out of their way to criticize people for enjoying things they do not, ESPECIALLY when they aren't even in the original discussion (making it counter productive to discussion just like an edgy troll on Reddit) and have allegedly fingered each other's asses a few times.

>>
>>64077793
No I "get" it, it's just a terribly lazy and sonically derivative genre. Occasionally an album will break that stereotype, but that is the exception, not the rule.

Actually, any album that claims to be vaporwave that is the least bit interesting immediately generates debates over whether or not that album should be considered vaporwave, which should be proof in itself how shitty the average vaporwave release is.

sure!
as far as discovering something deeper in goes, what really makes a difference is familiarizing with the album/artist/song titles and extrapolating meaning from those. for example: the album net force by tane is love is all about physics. you would never guess just by listening, but by translating the song titles it becomes clear and it's super cool.
also there's the idea of 'found profundity', you might call it. like in the infamous リサフランク420 / 現代のコンピュー. "i'm giving up on trying to sell you things you ain't buying" takes on a whole new meaning and significance when filtered through the musical content of floral shoppe.
plus, on the musical side, if you like ambient/drone music, ambient vaporwave (outsider ambient) offers an interesting take on ambient/drone music.

i'll respond to second thing in next post to keep this thing moving

>>64078585
in my eyes, art only has value as it is seen by the consumers of said art. that is to say, only consumers of art can endow value, not artists. therefore, whatever the artist believes they are conveying with their art is irrelevant. if the artist can't communicate what he wants with his art, then it doesn't deserve to be seen that way.
in the same way, if an artist puts a special amount of effort into an album, but produces a poor result, the result is still poor! for example, i've heard an argument that sparklehorse's music must be good because he is a perfectionist with the musical side of his content, even going as far as customizing his own instruments to get just the sound he wants. now, if that level of effort is undetectable by any listener, does it really exist? (see: if a tree falls in the forest does it make a sound. . . [the answer is no, because sound only exists by being perceived by the *human* ear in this case])

i think about it like math teachers. they may prize the work put into a problem, but ultimately what matters is that the student arrives at the correct answer!

>what really makes a difference is familiarizing with the album/artist/song titles and extrapolating meaning from those
Wait I thought the artist was supposedly irrelevant here.

>>64079696
Jesus does this hurt my brain. I've spent this entire time since your post working through this logically. After all that, unfortunately there is only one thing of which I am only mostly certain:

Art is expression.

This would imply that the artist, the expresser, is integral. Art does not spontaneously appear. It comes from somewhere, and that somewhere is an artist. To argue otherwise would imply a greater objective aesthetic to art, where if art does not depend on artistic expression, it is self-evident? This is clearly not the case. I think that's fairly obvious, but I imagine someone could disagree. I think the discussion ends there? I've been trying to logically entertain further, but it's really difficult.

I'm very unsatisfied with this response, and I'm beginning to believe that the aesthetic/appreciative approach to understand art is virtually incompatible with the expressive approach to understanding art, which bothers me greatly.

>if a tree falls in the forest does it make a sound. . . [the answer is no, because sound only exists by being perceived by the *human* ear in this case]

>>64086099
i think you're kinda trying to hold on by the last possible thread you can find!
you say that my argument implies an objective standard for art or what IS art, and this couldn't be further from the truth. when you separate the artist from the art, it means that the only prerequisite for something to be seen as art is that it exists—anything can be art! all that determines what is art is the understanding of the observer.

example: stonehenge

Good morning /daily/.
I saw Gira live yesterday and it was great. I even got an autograph from the man and for a minute during the set, Kristof Hahn was standing right next to me.

Has anyone seen Ryoji Ikeda live? I felt like listening to Dataplex a few days ago and googled his name and turns out he's playing a show just 30 minutes from where I live in a couple of weeks. Will try to fit it into my schedule

About a year and a half ago I bought five new ties, because I thought "yeah I still use a tie over a bowtie occasionally, might as well". Still haven't used a single one of them, because I only use bowties these days. FML.

I really want a bowtie with a tartan pattern, something like pic. Right now I only have plain coloured ones.

Also I bought a bunch of local, small scale brewery beers for tonight, gonna out-hipster everyone.
