He basically sounded like Pharoah Sanders before Pharoah Sanders.

Albert Ayler is just completely different. Like Pharoah was different enough, but there is hardly any comparison between Trane and Ayler. Also Pharaoh>>>>>>Archie, just sayin'

People say to start with Kind of Blue. My suggestion is to listen to each of the player's solo on that record intently. See which player you resonate with the most and explore their recorded material and gain more curiosity from there. Look at their sidemen and their discography.

Apart from Solo Guitar, what are some other good Bailey's albums in your opinion? I only listened to Pieces for Guitar and it's pretty comfy.
>>
"Let My Children Hear Music" by Charles Mingus might be the greatest album I've ever heard in any genre.

For the classics, Ornette Coleman's "The Shape of Jazz to Come" is the way to go

I was hoping this thread would have more good recommendations - /mu/ is disappointingly entry level with jazz

Honestly, Solo Guitar is by far the best Bailey relase, but Aida is also worth checking.
Not strictly Bailey, but there's an improvisation group named "Company" which Bailey formed part of (and as far as I know he also was the improvising leader of), I'd recommend you their 1976 relase, Company 1. And if you branch out a little to relases where Bailey is not the leader but an improsier, I would also strongly recommend Evan Parker's The Topography of the Lungs, and Spontaneous Music Ensemble's “So, what do you think” and Karyobin, but to a lesser extent.
>>64067958
Have you listened to When Angels Speak of Love? Severly underrated Sun Ra, honestly.
>>64067180
I remember you mentioning you hadn't listened to that much of Cecil Taylor's outpot, maybe you would enjoy his 1978 relase "3 Phasis"
>>64067177
I can try to recommend you something if you post more albums you enjoy.
>>
>>64067991
>Have you listened to When Angels Speak of Love?
Not yet. I will listen to it right now. I listen to Sun Ra everyday but I think I'm still missing 50% of his output. It's amazing how, even after listening to dozens of his albums, he still manages to surprise me.
>>
Wayne Shorter - Night Dreamer
Mal Waldron - The Quest
Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain
Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady (or Mingus at Antibes)
Eric Dolphy - Outward Bound

Probably

Bonus pick : Sunset Mission
>>
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady
Miles Davis - In A Silent Way
Bill Evans - The Complete Live at the Village Vanguard 1961

I could easily pick those four as favorites. Getting a fifth is a little harder, though. Nothing immediately jumps out at me. If I had to pick another, it'd probably be another Coltrane or Mingus album. Maybe Monk's Dream. Fuck. I dunno. It just depends on my mood.

>>64062348
>Spectrum - Billy Cobham
Rad album. If you're into fusion and you haven't heard Stanley Clarke's School Days, you should check it out.
>>
>>64067180
>Grant Green - Idle Moments
I hadn't listened to any of the albums on your list, Boku, but you generally have pretty good taste in music, so I picked this one at random. I'm loving it so far.

I recommend you these three albums:
>Modern Jazz Quartet - Django
One of the most acclaimed Cool Jazz albums.
>Gerry Mulligan - Gerry Mulligan Quartet
He played the saxophone for Davis, and if my memory dosen't fail me, he even played on Birth of the Cool.
>Bill Evans - Explorations
Another member of the Davis' group, who also played Cool Jazz.
>>64068230
If you enjoyed the singing on Karma and would like more of it in shorter and more conventional songs while sitll being jazz, I would recommend Leon Thomas' Spirits Known and Unknown.
And you defintelyshould check Alice Coltrane's Journey in Satchidananda and Miles Davis' Big Fun if you haven't yet, I think you may like them as well.
>>64068183
If you enjoy In a Silent Way, you should also try to listen to ECM Jazz.
Try Terje Rypdal - Descendre if you want to go more abstract and ethereal, Or Keith Jarrett's Survivors' Suite and Köln Concert to get an idea of what ECM Jazz usually is.
>>64069113
Sure, what kind of Free Jazz are you looking for?

>>
>>64063793

>>
>>64069212
>Kaoru Abe
You may like Masayuki Takayanagi's Action Direct: Three Improvised Variations on a Theme of Qadhafi; he used to duet with him
>fucked up shit with no structure
Free Improvisation seems worth your time, a good place to start is Derek Bailey's Solo Guitar, not sure if you are looking for noisy records, but Side A of solo guitar surely is disjointed. If you enjoy it, you might as well check what I recommend about Bailey in this post >>64067991 which usually is more noisy but still disjointed.
But if instead, you are searchig for a large group of instruments yelling at you, you might enjoy:
>London Jazz Composers' Orchestra - Ode
>Sam Rivers - Crystals
And if you want [Full Power Total Destruction] you could try Alan Silva's Luna Surface; sonically intense wall of noise free jazz, it's enjoyable, but it can be exhausting for 30 minutes.
Not sure if that's what you were searching for, though.
>>
>>64069401

Thanks, now the complete opposite, what are in your opinion some god-tier cool jazz albums? Might need those after listening to those noise-jazz albums.

No problem. I'll mention them from favorites to lesser favorites.
My favorite Cool Jazz album is hard to pick, probably a tie between Lennie Tristano's The New Tristano and Stan Getz' Focus. Birth of the Cool by Miles Davis is an essensial listen on the genre, but I honestly prefer Bill Evan's and Gerry Mulligan's Solo output (Explorations, and Quartet, respectively).
The other essensial Cool Jazz albums I recommend are Django and Fontessa by the Modern Jazz Quartet and Time Out by Dave Brubeck.

Also, to anyone I recommended things in this thread, I would appreciate to hear your opnion on those records, whenever you listen to them.
>>
>>64069614
Already listened to Evans and Mulligan's stuff, and also to Time Out by Brubeck... To be quite honest I was expecting more by Brubeck, the only song I could enjoy was Take Five. I know, it's probably his most famous song, but I found the record the be boring if compared to other stuff. Thanks for the recs btw.
>>
>>64069614
Ever listened to pic related? Would you rec it?
>>
>>64069647
>I was expecting more by Brubeck, the only song I could enjoy was Take Five.
Understandable, Take Five and Blue Rondo are the standout tracks, but I still found the rest of the album to be solid.
>>64069695
Actually, I was thinking about this record some days ago. I only listened to it once around a year ago and had no strong feelings on it, but if I remember properly, it had an intense atmosphere.
I'm listening to it right now, I'll try to give a proper opinion once I'm finished.

>>
>>64069614
>I honestly prefer Bill Evan's and Gerry Mulligan's Solo output
I feel like Bill Evans really figured out the heart of it. He never did anything that was truly revolutionary, but his precision and consistency was unmatched. If you listen all the way through the Complete Live at the Village Vanguard, it's crazy how effortless it is for him.
>>
>>64069695
Just finished listening to it, the album seems to present different ideas, but my favorites are the ones at Excursion, which I think remain unmatched on the rest of the album and even present a Spectral Music aura. And I think the rest of the album is a good example of ECM Jazz. So yes, I would recommend it.
And I wonder if you could recommend me a jazz album wtih a similar atmosphere to Excursion, it almost feels like Spectral Music played by a Jazz band.

It's a good record though. Who cares if it's a basic list? Some of us are new to jazz and others just enjoy those records, I bet even the experts on jazz wouldn't mind putting Davis, Coltrane or Mingus on their top 5.
>>
>>64070588
It's a good record but it's a boring one. People see the bold on RYM and skip everything else Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers have done before it. That's my only frustration with it, really. Their '56 s/t is so much more interesting to me.
>>
>>64070619
I agree to a certain extent, but look at it this way: some people listen to so much music they really don't have the time to dig Jazz. I am new to Jazz myself, and I barely have time to finish three records a day, digging entire discographies would take too much time, especially if you consider that I have other interests, hobbies and genres I like.
