they are interested in social issues and music that pertain to those issues, commonly. either that or they are trying to deliberately craft a narrative about music. they were right in their kendrick and kanye reviews because those are both great artists but a lot of the time they are completely and unreasonably off the mark and are catering to a certain audience.
it's why the number of black musicians on their year-end lists have increased. not because it's wrong to recognize the talent of black musicians, but they're doing it not out of an actual love for the music but to seem open-minded IMO.
i'm probably talking shit but fuck it, if pitchfork actually gave a shit about black artists they would always have given their music a fair shake.

I used to read p4k back in around 2010 simply because I didn't know any better. Listened to all of their end-of-the-year picks, because they should be great… Right?…
Then time and time again I have downloaded albums which were complete disappointments. Now I just can't take their top 10 if the year seriously.
The worst part is that some Grimes song was named best song of the 2010-2014… Because it was about rape. Yep. Not even kidding. Unfortunately this list doesn;t load for me now for some reason

I actually think they're rating the reissues, not the albums themselves. I don't remember now, but they did rate low some reissues of the albums which they themselves said were GOAT. And otherwise, praised so-so albums reissued with tons of bonus content.
