I've been a Slayer fan for a while and I'll admit metal, let alone Slayer has some pretty shitty fanbase members. I'm guessing most of it has to do with the dark lyrics and it gives them a sense of feeling above everyone else because they listen to a more extreme genre.
I think it's a close tie between metal fans and K-Pop / J-Rock fans. Some hip hop fans aren't to far off either.

I can confirm that when I got into metal I was a poorly adjusted high school student taking way too many ADHD drugs. However since then, I've gotten my shit straightened out and am fucking bitches left and right, etc.
I now frequently enjoy music from virtually every genre- from experimental hip hop to country to gospel- but still find myself defaulting to metal. So at a core level, I don't think that my love for the genre had to do with a need to channel my different-ness or feel superior so much as my natural leaning toward powerful, driving music influenced by the classical and opera pieces I was exposed to as a kid. Likewise as a kid I was also exposed to a lot of fantasy and history and ate that shit up.
There have to be plenty of metal fans like me, however I will openly admit that there are tons of pretentious ones who happen to be the most outspoken, given the general nature of being a pretentious individual (/mu/ knows all about that). I have always found metalheads' intolerance toward other genres PAINFULLY ironic. If anything, we should be the most tolerant of music fans given the crazy shit we enjoy. You can't expect others to open their minds when you have already shut yours, you are not special because you like distorted guitar noises. If you shit on pop/country for cheesiness or rap for thugishness, and have ever enjoyed an Iron Maiden or Slayer song, you need to grab a dictionary and look up the term "self awareness."
