Country music has always made a point of speaking to working class and even poor rural Americans. The problem is modern country has crossed the line to 'pandering'
I'm not sure what EDM speaks to other than dancing and getting high, Rap speaks to a fantasy world of sex and massive disposable incomes - or living in a urban ghetto, and Indie rock is either inscrutable or whiny. For all it's banality I can still identify with songs about working hard, drinking beer and wanting a better truck than I can any of those things
Not to mention, country has some of the best narrative songs out of any genre and a good ol lost love song is universal and works especially well with a steel guitar and mournful country vocals

Country singers have always commissioned, covered, rewrote, referenced and flat out stolen words and and melodies, it's a big part of the genre.
So is the singer / songwriter, but there's no shame in country about not writing your own material the way there is with your Indie darlings.

Reporting in from the birthplace of country music here - good country exists, but you've just got to go for the classics like Cash and Nelson. Jason Isbell and Chris Stapleton are pretty good recent artists
