Anyone here in a band?

What's it like, how often do you practice together, and do you have any tips for someone joining or forming a band?
>>
it's fucking hard. leqarn to make music on your own as much as possible. makes things easier
>>
>>64039320
>it's fucking hard

what about it? can you expand please, I would like to know what I'm getting myself into. any experience or tips from anyone here would be really appreciated
>>

i started my band and write all of the music and lyrics for it.

i was lucky enough to get some pretty skilled musicians to play my stuff with, so we only practice once a week and are able to stay pretty tight. most of the time, practices are for working on new stuff im writing.

if i had a tip, it would be that if you don't have anyone you know to fill a spot, learn how to fill it yourself, and sometimes do that even if you do know someone, because having the most control possible over your vision, providing it's still good, is a really great thing. it all depends on what you're trying to do in terms of song-writing though so that might now apply. if you have any questions, let me know, op.
>>
i've been in many bands, in many genres. being in a traditional band is more fun. (4+ people)

the smaller the band the more sustainable it is though. my current group is small and we rely on a lot of electronics so we don't really have to practice much.

if you have three guitars and a drum set you are just gonna have to practice a lot.

starting or joining a band isn't hard though. you just need to jump into it. just get over the idea that you need to find people who share your exact mindset or know how to play instruments. getting along with the people is the most important part of actually making the band function.

thanks for the offer. do you have some advice for getting over nervousness when performing? also if i write a lot of songs with a group, do i lose all those riffs and ideas when/if i leave the group? or would i be able to tell them to stop playing things i wrote? also if i'm low on gear but can make up for it in playing, do you think i could still fit in with a band?
>>
I'm in a cover band. We just play Taking Back Sunday all the time because Tell All Your Friends will never be topped.
>>
i wish. It's all i have wanted my whole life but the only musicians i ever find are guitar players (like myself)
>>
it definitely takes hard work to play proficiently with a group of people. if not everyone is on the same page, or effort isn't being put forth equally, the whole thing can turn to shit. also fuck playing covers. being able to write your own music and then having to play a shit ton of covers sucks ass m8. just play original music as soon as you can.

I'm in a band with my mates from school, we play hardcore/skate punk and crossover thrash. We practice at least three times a week, usually in the drummer's basement or garage so we're always on top of our game. Each practice session usually takes about 5-6 hours, and we take half-hour to sometimes hour breaks so we're always ready to play and we have the energy to do it.

As for tips, there will always be one slacker, if the lyrics are shouted/screamed, don't make the singer strain too much. My voice is still a bit shot from our early days. Always invest in equipment. If somebody has stagefright, tell them to get over it quick or get the hell out. Also, drummers are very hard to find these days. I was fortunate enough to find a band where the drummer was already in it, but it was hell finding him.

So hard to coordinate with people who all have adult(ish) financial responsibilities.

Beyond that, as far as getting along with people creatively and not succumbing to the sort of shit that makes celebrated artists with tons of potential cash to make say fuck it and walk away from it all, the struggle is real. Even in the context of a high school garage band. Especially in that context.

The biggest practical concern is the equipment and the noise it makes. Rounding up a person with a full drum set, who can play it, is willing to play it, is able to transport it from place to place, and isn't a complete fucking disaster of a human being is challenge enough. Then good luck finding a (free) place where you can actually play the thing.

If you want to join a band, become a drummer. Guitarists and singers are a dime a dozen, any guitarist can be a passable bassist for most bands. A good drummer is hard to find...

Life is good. Currently in one legit band that is currently mixing and mastering an album, I'm about to play my first gig with a new band (and we've already written stuff so that's nice), and I'm about to have my first practice for a funk group that some friends are starting

I revived my high school band and it's a lot of fun. Were just a two piece so getting together to practice is super easy and were best friends so we vibe really well. Writing our stuff is really as easy as jamming together and playing whatever comes out. My tips would be convince a good friend to jam because it's so much easier that way and do everything yourself at first. Record a demo at home, go to show and network, make friends in the scene and play as many shows as you can. I's a lot of fun man

most bands i've been in we were more hanging out then making music. Most guys are flakey, and have very fragile egos. Also the second you insult someones playing, intentionally or not, your band is doomed.

My theory is this...guys who can really play (like are traditionally skilled) are toxic. Play with guys you like and learn as you go
>>
>>64042510
>guys who can really play (like are traditionally skilled) are toxic

I've noticed the complete opposite. In my years, I've noticed that musicians that are mediocre or beginner-tier, seem to think they're much better than they really are (probably because they are passionate, just started playing, noticed some improvement, and now think they're the shit). Therefore, since they think they're already good, theyre less compelled to practice and have their hearts and minds 100% into their craft. Traditionally, or better yet, NATURALLY skilled musicians have that drive to always be better, and thus their music reflects that

>>64042294

Exactly. And I say this from a beginner stand point, too. I have only been in my first band for less than a year. It all happened very quickly. We started doing a bunch of shows, writing what I thought were kind of half baked songs. They had some good energy, and some were genuinely catchy. But overall I think the whole "lo fi garage punk surf" thing is a cop out for making really cheap, vapid music. It's fun to a degree, but I really wanted to get more involved in the song writing. perhaps I'm too serious. Idk. I just don't think that every little riff or part that we shit out is worthy of being a song. Perhaps something to build on, but that's it.

OP I'm a noob as well, but any advice I could offer (to you or anyone else) is: be selfish as an artist, but not as a friend or a person with your mates. Don't compromise your own growth creatively, but be respectful of others. If you really feel like you're ever being stunted, walk away and find a new place to grow.
>>
>>64042510
Don't listen to this guy
>>
>>64039378

I was in a band last year. It's hard if there's different priorities and you're not on the same page. We pretty much became a band because it was that tough just getting people in our town to play together.

Also, if someone is better at asserting themselves, you'll feel like you're being undermined because things will generally tilt their way. I feel much better now that I make music alone, even though I have no chance to play out.

Not saying bands can't work, but I generally have a very specific direction onto where I want songs to be going, and bending to accommodate to someone else is tough for me.
