98.12.28 is oddly depressing considering context. Same with Uchu Nippon Setagaya.

The Complete Blind Willie Johnson is soul crushing.

Giles Corey s/t

Uneven Compromise

Anything by Elliott Smith really. My favorite is XO but his most depressing is definitely From a Basement on a HIll.

Last time I cried to a song was https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDvKsQAafGU but that probably has more to do with the show's impact on me than anything else.

I'm listening to some Norwegian microtonal guitar music. I am not having a good time, all things considered. I think the playing is too inactive, or perhaps it's just more core experimentation than meat grown off from that.

Why did Mizutani dress like this in the 90s? He dressed pretty normally in the 70s and 80s, but then he started wearing weird sparkly jackets and butt hugging pants. His face also got Handsome Squidward tier.

I've been marathoning whatever video footage of Rallizes I could find, and this was one the things I noticed.

>Washington Phillips - Key to The Kingdom

Poseurcore or not this was fucking entertaining. I never really got into gospel music but this was a nice introduction. Surprisingly catchy. Something about the terrible recording quality really made this entertaining

>Hieroglyphics - 3rd Eye Vision

Thought this was awesome for the most part. There were a few parts that were too dense lyrically... don't know how else to explain it but it almost sounded too academic at times. Production was awesome tho. And I really like Del the Funky Homosapien... had no idea he was in this group until I started listening. Great listen with very few weak moments

That might be it. The few in-depth examinations of Rallizes' career show that they had gotten a bit old in the eyes of the Japanese audience, so it might be a way to get some attention back.

I also noticed he started being a bit more theatrical. In the 70s and 80s, he kind of stood in the back and was about as exciting to watch as Robert Fripp. But after it was easier to record him in the 90s, he did guitar spins, stood front and center of the stage, gripped the microphone and made emotional faces, and would take his sunglasses off (and then put them back on when he did something cool, like the feedback wall at the end of The Last One). He also made fancier exits of the stage. One video I saw from 1994 had him finish the wall of noise at the end of The Last One, and as the screeching echoed through the room, he jumped off the stage, put his sunglasses back on, and waved goodbye before walking out the door. Beforehand, the set would end and he would just casually get his things and walk away. It's a weird change to see for sure.

The only constant thing with him was that he never talked with the audience and that he always loved to mess with his hair during the moments when he wasn't playing the guitar. Actually, what is the deal with Japanese people and their inability to restrain themselves from tossing their hair? I noticed that Haino and Damo Suzuki also do it.

Finally, I also noticed they got a second guitarist for some reason. He appears to be playing the same thing as Mizutani, but without any feedback. Why? He also looks EXACTLY like Mizutani back in the 70s - long black hair, tight white pants, black coat, sunglasses, lipstick, the works.

That is all for today's autistic analysis of the frontman of a relatively obscure (but not really) Japanese band.
>>
>>64040029
Those are some nice recs, an empty bliss beyond this world and down colorful hill are both 10s for me. Neat beats is also really great. Have you listened to his 2015 album sleep cycles? It's not as good as cosmic surgery imo, but its still a great listen.
>>

I actually think that Fujio Yamaguchi was the best thing that happened to Rallizes because he brought in some balance to the sound and gave more space to explore to Mizutani. Playing along to a bass line is alright and all, but Fujio did part-time rhythm sections too. Double Heads is probably the best example.

Also, when both indulged into the feedback orgies it was marvellous.
>>
>>64040331
thx mom

And yeah, and I thought the same. Certainly a bit more cohesive, but not quite as impactful, certainly.
>>
>>64040368

Is it Yamaguchi? He looks very young, even though he was around the same age as Mizutani at the time.
>>
>>64040420
Well if the video is between the late 70s and early 80s then most likely yes. I am not too familiar with other Mizutani picks for additional guitarists.

I meant in the 90s. He looks like a clone of 70s Mizutani. He never really did anything exciting in the ~5 different shows I found on YouTube.

As for MMM '82, it's in my queue. I've heard good things.
>>
>>64040613

I think it's personally best spread out between shows, but that's just me. Make sure it's night time and you have no outside distractions when you get to Disk 3 for the best effect.
>>
>>64040693
Hmmm interesting. No idea who that is. Was he present in more than 1 show?
>>
Post your favorite non-Rallizes Fujio Yamaguchi song

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2L3C0Z777E
>>
>>64040814

I think so? Most of the time, the camera was fixed on Mizutani, so it's difficult to make out who else was on stage. I have no idea what their drummer at the time looked like, for example, but I do know he was probably the same one every time because his drum set had a swastika painted on the bass drum for some reason. It could be a different person each time with similar fashion sense, but I'm pretty sure it's the same dude. The shaky camera makes things hard to tell.
>>
>>64040923

Excellent cheekbones as well. Truly, Japanese guitar skill is directly correlated with cheekbone quality.

Köld, by Solstafir.

The Void, by Junko, really does not have much staying power, sadly. The concept is pretty cool still.

Finally figured out how to add that outer glow to make rankings stand out. Might reformat the chart tomorrow, who knows.

5000 Spirits was awesome, reminded me a lot of Astral Weeks in a way. Not sure why but that psych folk influence was just awesome the whole way through. Definitely seems like it could grow on me over time too, I'll have to revisit it soon

Glasser album was pretty solid as an indie pop project. Nothing really stood out but it was a pretty pleasant experience. Might come back to it if I need something relaxing for the background

HELL CUP

Warm Sofa vs Gina

Sofa and Gina are only in two brackets in the quarterfinals, and in both they face each other.
I enjoyed Thousand Knives and will get more of his work but Yndi Halda hit pretty hard with how I'm feeling right now and is just great post-rock overall although it often feels more like slowcore (which isn't bad in any way).

Gina wins

>>
>>64045719
I can't be bothered to put that much effort into this thing, in all honesty.

There's been several instances that I've noticed over the years where the attitudes and opinions of this board regarding one thing or another got turned in a specific direction(usually a negative one) through what was blatantly the sheer perseverance of one very dedicated shitposter and I always thought that it was really interesting and even admirable that someone would work so hard on something so absurd, but I just don't have that sort of enthusiasm for this shit.

I guess I'll always be stuck on this lazy and unrefined level of just throwing generic insults around.

I can't believe I read that whole thing. It started out as an actually interesting, if flawed, exploration of the philosophical implications of Lewis' modal realism theories, but way too quickly devolved into fantastical weeaboo garbage. If this is supposed to be a legitimate defense of fantasizing about imaginary (probably anime) girls, then it does a shit job. At least he sort of admits it in the end.

Does anyone actually believe this kind of thinking is the justification for loving a figment of your imagination? Why not start more basic?

If this wasn't published by UT Austin, I would've dismissed this as elaborate bait.

>Joe Farrell - Moon Germs
This was fine. Way closer to modal jazz than any type of fusion. A lot of tracks are generally stale and unexciting. The bass caries it for me. Point in case: "Bass Folk Song," which is a great track in which the players come together well and Herbie Hancock gets a little soloing space. I might only come back for this track. 6/10

Speaking of whom...

>Herbie Hancock - Thrust
This was good--not as great as Headhunters--but still funky as shit. Not as out-there either, unfortunately, but same general formula. The only thing that sucks here in my opinion is "Butterfly," but everything else is worth listening to. 7.5/10

One left, got some ideas for my next chart...

They're all quality players and everything, and what they're doing here--a sound in-between free and fusion jazz--is admittedly pretty impressive, but this wasn't incredibly compelling to me. Not a ton of tension, unfortunately. That being said, what a great organist. 6.5/10

I just have burnout periods. You know, where I listen to like 200 albums in a month, and then when I'm not sure what to listen to next or have a bad day where I hear ten albums and none of them jump out at me, then I can go weeks without listening to anything. So I'm glad I was lucky enough to have today hit the ground running with this gem.
>>
>>64050987
Yeah, give it a shot if you're curious. I can guarantee you won't make it to the end. It's just the sterile, smooth, mall jazz (whatever they call it) aesthetic that vaporwave critiques/borrows from, which I could look past, but the compositions and playing from Miles are so inoffensive and edgless that it's almost unrecognizable.

I haven't listened to Doo Wop, but I've only heard bad things, so I'm curious.

I sort of picked up that nugget early on in my music listening. 90% of bands do their best work in their first four albums, either by their first being the best and then going on the slippery slope down, or their first being lackluster/mediocre before gradually improving, then SHARPLY going into lameass land.

It's happened to all the guitarists' solo work that I liked. Jan Akkerman, Pekka Pohjola, Jukka Tolonen, Steve Morse, John Shakti, etc. It's depressing hearing them go from these genre-bending/transcending riffs and melodies and then as they get older, they start singing or playing some shoddy blues.

As another general rule, I've seen that any band/artist from the 60s/70s don't make it into or out of the 1980s without sounding completely boring/awful afterwards.

Rare sneak peak at my next New Orleans R&B/Berlin School chart. A couple genres I want to dive into that are foreign to me. Some stuff I've heard in passing and want to hear more of--or the opposite--revisiting some stuff I didn't get.

Before you ask--I've already heard and enjoyed Gris-Gris.

Grimes - Art Angels
[2015]

Fuck. The record starts off with the track "Laughing And Not Being Normal", which is probably the most embarassing song title one could imagine. Titles aren't really part of the music but they make the artist's intentions clearer, so the album doesn't look promising by then.
The most memorable songs in between all the vapid other tracks are Scream, which features a chinese female rapper (that's really cool i must admit), Kill V. Maim and Realiti, even if the unmastered version is in all ways superior.
The biggest flaw in my opinion is how she does this "cute" voice on every song, which is despisable and comes off as fake. The mastering and production don't really make anything shine really, and every song seems like a shadow of a shadow of another.

Gets a yellow star because I didn't really hate it and was somewhat entertained

Hahaha YES, this opening track is fucking great. Hitting all the right buttons with stuff I've heard from Waitresses/Ludus, etc.
