Why is UK like Mecca of best musicians from 20th century?
>>
>>64026899
Is it, or are you only aware of them because of the massive exportation of American and British culture that kicked off after WW2?
>>
Does Ireland count as part of the UK? If so, I'd agree.
>>
Let's see, where was Tupac born?
>Not Britain
Well there's your answer. It's not.

It's certainly some kind of mecca, though.

This post is startling and non-sensical because Tupac was a very, very bad musician.

If that's how you feel, you must not enjoy hip hop at all, which brings the validity of your opinions on music into question.

Regardless of your opinion, Tupac was a huge cultural icon and as close to a revolutionary that hip hop ever had. His impact on hip hop was massive and he'll be a household name in western countries for decades.
>>
>>64027195
how so?
he made music about what he believed in and put his emotions into nearly every song, which I'm pretty sure qualifies as art in the form of music.
>>
>>64027259
Not him, but his validity as an artist and the quality of his music are two entirely separate things.

For example, yes, Viper really is addicted to crack. But his music is still bad.

And, an example of the opposite: Dr. Dre rapped about being a gangster when in reality his was firmly middle class and Dre never got into the gang life, and had his lyrics written for him by others. But, his music was still good.

i mixed up authenticity and validity as an artist

>>you must not enjoy hip hop at all, which brings the validity of your opinions on music into question.
Yeah, if you genuinely do not enjoy an entire genre, pointing out a single artist as bad, especially one so widely acclaimed, brings the validity of your opinions into question, at least as far as hip hop goes.

It'd be like me not liking rock and calling Jimi Hendrix a poor artist.
>>
>>64027300
That doesn't answer the question: How was Tupac a bad musician?

A rapper's instrument is his voice and his lyrics, which Tupac has gotten widespread critical acclaim for.
>>
>>64027489
>Yeah, if you genuinely do not enjoy an entire genre, pointing out a single artist as bad, especially one so widely acclaimed, brings the validity of your opinions into question, at least as far as hip hop goes.
simplifying this a bit:

if you don't enjoy an entire genre, you're obviously not going to enjoy artists that make music that fits into that genre. so why would your opinions on that single artist matter when you feel the same about every other artist in the genre? you have no standard for what qualifies good hip hop if you feel that all hip hop is bad.

You're missing the point of what I said; if you don't enjoy an entire genre, your opinions on a specific artist are irrelevant.

For example, I don't enjoy Electro-Swing or K-Pop. So me singling out specific artists from either genre as bad would be silly. I don't like the entire genre, of course I wouldn't enjoy particular artists that make music within that genre. Which is why my opinions on Electro-Swing and K-Pop are irrelevant. I don't enjoy either genre.

>>
>>64027765
I have no idea what you're on about at this point. I'm doing exactly what I described: I don't like either of those genres, so I'm not praising or criticizing artists within the genre. I'm not backpedaling. Music was too broad of a generalization, in hindsight, but I'm still correct.

He was criticizing Tupac when he doesn't enjoy hip hop; if you don't enjoy hip hop, the relevance of your opinions on specific artists from within the genre is questionable. That's what I'm saying. You're going to have to be more specific with whatever problem your finding in my statement.

Hey guys how about we stop having this retarded tumblr-tier discussion and actually talk about the point of the thread.

I wouldn't say the UK dominated music for the ENTIRE 20th century, but it sure as hell did during the 50s-70s, which was arguably the most important part by far. Anyone naming the top 10 most respected and influential rock bands of all time should have at least 7 from the UK and maybe 3 from the US. Why did the limeys kick our asses so bad? Is it because of our culture? Is it because our record companies ruined potentially great artists?

Perhaps making culture out of real people leading real lives is more culturally significant than fantasy shit.

>>64030275
So what? Name another country which doesn't have a cultural dichotomy of some kind. There is more 'good' culture in the UK than anywhere else, and the best of our culture is the best of world culture.
