Am I wrong? I've never listened to much metal but it all feels like angsty teens rebelling in a very calculated way.
It's probably still the best thrash metal album ever made. There are some other greats too but I'm hard pressed to say they're better. Master of Puppets is basically RTL part 2, which is still great and all, and Reign In Blood is blistering, but it's also super short and almost devoid of melody.

Metallica is really respected for a reason. They may kind of be dadmetal but they have some great shit. Thrash metal really isn't my style these days but I can still get down with some Metallica.

Ride The Lightning contains everything that was ever objectively good about Metallica. The production on this album is also the best they ever had - the sound is juicy and steely, something they lost later.

It's really not. It got a ten because it's a pioneering work of the genre. It's one of the earlier seminal albums from the genre and it got a ton of people into the genre.
There are better thrash albums. Loads of em, but this one was earlier and arguably did more for the history of the genre.
Megadeth's Rust in Peace is better.
Slayer's classic 3 album span from Reign to Seasons.
Arguably Master of Puppets and Justice.

The production is nowhere near the best. It's before they tried to make their albums "loud" to the point where they lost dynamics (Black to present) but it's still somewhat cheap sounding 80s production. The sound quality does not match Master of Puppets.
Ride The Lightning was a pivotal point in thrash metal. Before there was only meat heads playing at 180 bpm singing about fighting people. But with Ride the Lightning Metallica proved that thrash metal could be a legitimate art form.

Generally there aren't many metal bands that survive production. When they do it's a glorious thing. This albums being one of the blueprints on how to not fuck it up.

Partially. You could say a lot of the gore or satanic imagery in death metal isn't really serious. Even if there are """""real""""" """"satanists""""" ( muh Behemoth, muh Deicide ) in metal, Venom who popularized the "evil hellish satan fucks you" thing said it was all for the show. I don't get the gore but i like the bands so whatever.
On the otherside metal was at his birth more a poor people, outcast thing ( don't begin to talk about mallcore it's not remotely true today ) if some ways to display emotions or opinions were hidden or indirect the genre overall, outside of headliners or marketable mallcore isn't really artificial.
In the case of thrash metal, hardcore influence often lead to the genre being very down to earth and all that edginess being quite sincere. But again Slayer made an album called "god hate us all" and have ( had? i don't remember if it was the one who died ) a christian in the band. In general being over the top is a common and general feature of metal.
Anyway i like that music so the intentions of the people making it are quite secondary.
