How come so much of the 90s alt rock is so whiny and angsty and dreary and sad? I listen to and enjoy a lot of that music but eventually it starts to wear on you

How come so much of the 20s country blues is so whiny and angsty and dreary and sad? I listen to and enjoy a lot of that music but eventually it starts to wear on you

Cobain's life was sad. The guy obviously had personality disorders. Was kicked out of home. Did lots of heroin. What did you expect from him?

Billy Corgan wasn't a cheerful guy either. Burned the bridges with the rest of his band. Played most of Siamese Dream himself.

As for other bands. The pendulum simply swung away from the cheerful raunchy hedonist glam-metal. It wasn't cool anymore.

because of economic prosperity and nothing significant going on socially, 90s youth culture was pretty alienated and nihilistic.
>>
>>63928375
Layne Staley was a heroin addict, Eddie Vedder had daddy issues, Chris Cornell was a depressed person for whatever reason.
>>
Soundgarden weren't a bunch of whiny dudes. Melvins weren't either. I don't know I guess if Nirvana and Alice In Chains are the only 90s alt rock bands you're thinking of I guess you might consider it sad.
>>
>>63928527
Soundgarden and the Melvins music was both angsty and sad, for instance Soundgarden wrote several songs about depression and suicide
>>
>>63928582
Yeah and Soundgarden also wrote songs about banging hot chicks and fun songs about satanic rituals. Just because they had serious stuff didn't mean they were whiny/angsty/dreary/sad. Soundgarden has a few sad songs and that's it.
>>
>>63928636
Nah Soundgarden's three studio albums from the 90s are nothing but angsty anger, sadness and depression
>>
>>63928452
That too obviously. RIP Layne Staley
>>
>>63928152
heroin and meth
>>
>>63928749
I guess so if you haven't heard them.

Their albums get more depressing as they go on.

Down On The Upside is depressing as fuck
>>
>>63928820
I can think of three sad songs from that album.
>>
>>63928820
Superunknown is pretty depressing as well
>>
>>63928152
Pavement werent angst or whinny
>>
>>63928839
>Zero Chance
>Applebite
>Blow Up The Outside World
>Never The Machine Forever
>Tighter & Tighter
>Overfloater
>Bootcamp (most depressing song ever)
>>
>>63928152
It's not like Layne didn't have good reason to
>>
>>63928880
Slanted & Enchanted was pretty angsty
>>
>>63928915
Zero Chance, BUTOW, and Boot Camp are sad for sure.

Never the Machine Forever, T&T, and Overfloater sad though you've got to be fucking kidding me those songs are just badass those aren't sad
>>
>>63928152
It was really just grunge that was depressing.
>>
>>63928975
kek, have you even read the lyrics, overfloater especially is very depressing
>>
>>63929012
So is tighter and tighter
>>
>>63929012
Yeah they're really not all that sad. They aren't exactly jumping for joy but if those songs make you sad then pretty much anything will.

>>63928975
Yea Superunknown isn't sad or depressing either
>>
Kids hated their parents for liking hair metal, made the "opposite" to that and shot up to further distance themselves from said parents and to feel like their juvenile angst rock was anything for than what is was, juvenile angst rock.
>>
>>63929074
What silly point is this making?
>>
>>63928152
They grew up in Seattle.
The Melvins was the best band to come out of the era.
>>
>>63929096
Totally an upbeat album clearly
>>
>>63929056
you can just admit you were wrong
>>
>>63928152
Because 80s pop and rock was largely happy and kids like to feel like they're doing something counter-cultural that their parents don't like.
>>
>>63929124
>admitting you're wrong when you're right
Why?
>>
>>63928152
because 80s were too happy for them
>>
>>63929074
>My Wave
>Superunknown
>Spoonman
>Kickstand
>depressing
>>
>>63929157
Bro just take your L like a man and stop further embarrassing yourself
>>
>>63929415
Soundgarden was notorious for laughing at themselves every once in a while/not taking themselves too seriously. It's literally common knowledge of that band. It's not difficult to understand.
>>
>>63929555
That means they didnt make angsty and depressing music?
>>
>>63929633
I never once said they didn't get serious or write any sad songs. They did on occasion. I said they weren't a bunch of whiny depressed mopers like some other bands in the scene were notorious for being. They get an inaccurate reputation in a way.
>>
>>63928880
they were indie not alt fuck off RYM
>>
>>63928582
>Melvins music was both angsty and sad
what are you on about?
>>
>>63929905
Are you implying lyrics such as "CUZ I CAN FORD A REDEED, ONLY STREET A WIDE A REEEEEELAND" aren't angsty and sad?
>>
>>63928152
It probably boiled down to that being what sold records at the time.
>>
>>63928152
Kurt was genuine, most generic grunge bands were just metal bands tiring to copy him.
>>
>>63929074
I'm pretty sure Cornell came up with the lyrics for this one when a bird flew into a brick wall and he had to put it out of its misery
>>
>>63928152
To be honest grunge/alt rock is the only "whiny and angsty and dreary and sad" music I could listen to.
I don't mind Joy Division or New Wave type stuff but it doesn't come off as hard hitting to me, it feels just o "lacking"
Indie and blues are ok too but I rarely ever go out searching for them
Depressing rap/hip hop is flat out cancer though
