I've been kinda trying to get into hip hop for a while now, people told me it's great for parties and that it can easily cheer me up.

So far I've listened to the following rappers: Young Thug, Rick Ross, Gucci Mane, Desiigner, Waka Flocka Flame, Chief Keef, Kanye West, Drake, PeeWee Longway, Migos, Future, Young Scooter, Travis Scott, Lil Durk, Kevin Gates and some other people.

I also like to get familiar with the artists I listen to, so I watched a bunch of interviews with them, and I want to know... Why is Drake the only one that can speak a piece of proper English and sound completely intelligible at times?

He actually comes across as a rather eloquent person at times, but why? Why is he the only one? And why are others not like him? I mean, you're a rapper, you rely on your words, so aren't you supposed to be a great lyricist, be familiar with the language as much as possible and have a huge vocabulary, so isn't it a bit contradictory to be like this?

Then again, I didn't pay that much attention to their lyrics, they could be shy and awkward in interviews, but maybe their lyrics are better, I have to check them out yet on rapgenius because I can't understand them that much while listening to their songs. The majority like them sound like that incomprehensible character from The Wire that was maybe a female or something. Future is the biggest offender when it comes to this. But anyways, yes, I have to check out the lyrics.

>proper English
No such thing. English is the bastard child of Old English being a cum dumpster for every other language on the planet.

And ebonics (or AAVE) is an actually recognized dialect of English with its own conventions and everything. It isn't just random slang like a lot of people seem to think it is.

It's image. It's another reason why hip hop isn't taken seriously as a form of music or art, because most rappers cannot escape the thug mentality and Ebonics they desperately crave and put in every one of their tracks.

I hope you're not being sarcastic or something but yes, linguistics.

>>63914682
It's because English was heavily influenced by Greek, Latin, and French. It's the reason modern English doesn't sound like German or Dutch.
>>
>>63914155
I assume this is a bait thread, but all the rappers you named are not exactly known for their lyrical content. With those rappers it is more about the beats and the energy their vocals bring to the production than what they are actually saying.

Maybe listen to some MF Doom, Mos Def (Black on Both Sides), The Roots, OutKast, GZA, Nas (Illmatic and Stillmatic), Tribe Called Quest, etc. Not that any of these are the absolute pinnnacle of hip hip lyricism but they obviously arent trap.
>>

If Gucci Mane got so much money then why he robbin'?

Seriously, I don't get the mentality of these people.

Gucci, Chief Keef, Migos, etc...

Aren't they millionaires now, their gang life is supposed to be behind them, so why are they getting constantly arrested for doing stupid ****?

They have all the money in the world, why would they still associate themselves with gangs and that thug life ****?

But to be able to study languages you also need to know those languages, right?

Now, that's fucked up, and like double the effort than just majoring in one language.
>>
>>63914882
Maybe, I don't know. Pronunciation would be really different though even if the words were more or less the same. A lot of English's silent letters like the silent e, the k and g in knight, etc were fully pronounced at some point in the language. And also at some point there was a shift in the pronunciation of vowels. I don't remember when that was but before that the vowel pronunciations would be pretty different too.

>>63914959
Not necessarily. It helps but when I was taking courses we were taught shit using languages just looking at the pronunciation of stuff and didn't really need to know the languages to come up with patterns that would help in whatever we were trying to do at the time.

If you go to some country to study some language though, more often than not you'll learn that language just by doing what you're doing though.

Most blacks are raised from birth in areas that heavily promote this kind of activity, which is why it's hard for the educated well adjusted black people to escape this stereotype. It's even harder now with people saying "if you don't agree that we should act like this you're racist" which only hurts their credibility even more but people are afraid to speak up about it.

They actually say it like that at one point in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. But yeah, the k in knife was pronounced too, and the e at the end I imagine too. Plus before that vowel shift I talked about the vowel in the middle was different. Going by the wiki page it would have been pronounced k-neef-eh or something.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Vowel_Shift

And yeah, this happened after 1100 so every word in that image I posted for middle English the vowels sound nothing like the modern vowels we use for those words.

There's another trick I've read about that linguists use. They look for misspellings.
When people misspell things, they often do so phonetically, so the way a word is misspelled gives you clues as to how it's pronounced relative to others.
>>
>>63915523
Kind of. It's comparison between various languages along with text from the period and I'm sure there's quite a bit of text covering pronunciation and grammar and such like we have dictionaries and other books. It's not really that different from any other science (if you want to call it science since it's generally considered a "soft" science) where many people will ask "well how do you know what things were like thousands of years ago" just because they're not familiar with the "science".

But there is still stuff we don't know. I'm pretty sure there's a lack of info on the actual pronunciation of Latin for instance even though we have tons of stuff about the written language. So while it's not blind guessing it isn't 100% concretely known either.

And Proto Indo European has basically no records so it's all basically guesswork based on comparing the decedents of the language and could be completely wrong for all we know. The further back you go the less you're going to find to go off of.

Linear A is another thing that we basically know nothing about other than it was a writing system. Egyptian hieroglyphics was another thing that we knew basically nothing about until the Rosetta Stone was found.

I love languages so I read about this kind of shit for fun. You should look up Basque too. Not too much is known about it but it's thought to be the only remnants of the paleolithic languages spoken in the Iberian peninsula.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suK34prc56o

The accent here sounds a lot like Spanish. Might be interference from Spanish since he probably also speaks it but could also be that that the way it sounds was originally from Basque and Spanish picked it up later.

Another interesting language related thing is that Japanese (or rather Japonic languages as there's apparently some islands with supposedly different but related languages) and Korean have no known related languages. Though I've read some stuff theorizing that Japanese is related to Altaic languages (like Turkish) somehow. Seems like some people also think Japanese and Korean are related. But no concrete proof.

Because it's cool, or rather, a lot of people think it looks cool , is cool. there is also this alpha male shit that comes into play, as well as the usually large social group that many of these artists are a part of, imagine if one of your friends, who used to be a smart , square-no drug or alcohol kind of guy, and he went to college and came back a stoner... wouldn't you be taken aback and kind of let down? It's almost the same thing for some of these rappers in reverse, all of a sudden they get radio/tv play and some money, and now they don't come back, or act/dress different? They would be resented and they would become an outcast from their hometown or neighborhood, from where they grew up, sometimes this is all they had really, so I can sort of understand why they wouldn't want to lose this.

>There is near uniformity of AAVE grammar, despite its vast geographic spread.[23]
>Linguists maintain that there is nothing intrinsically "wrong" or "sloppy" about AAVE as a language variety since, like all dialects, AAVE shows consistent internal logic and grammatical complexity, and is used naturally to express thoughts and ideas.[78] Other attitudes about AAVE are less positive; since AAVE deviates from the standard, its use is commonly misinterpreted as a sign of ignorance, laziness, or both.[79][80] Perhaps because of this attitude (as well as similar attitudes among white and other Americans), most speakers of AAVE are bidialectal, being able to speak with a more General American accent as well as AAVE. Such linguistic adaptation in different environments is called code-switching[81][82]—though Linnes (1998) argues that the situation is actually one of diglossia:[83] each dialect, or code, is applied in different settings.

I'm not going to quote the entire page but the Defining Features part of the page explains the uniform features of phonology and grammar and how it differs from standard English.

If you would read the page you would see it does.

>And to finish off with confirming the bias and voiding all "value" this "article" has.
Are you denying that "ebonics" is seen by white people are speaking "wrong"? I mean you're even trying to make this argument. I don't know if you're white or not though.

You are literally arguing with professionals on the subject because of of your own preconceptions. Might as well argue against evolution like a sheltered Christian. Sticking your fingers in your ears and yelling isn't a replacement for facts.

How?

>Are you denying that "ebonics" is seen by white people are speaking "wrong"?
No, but that statement does not belong in a creo article or discussion.
>You are literally arguing with professionals
No I'm arguing with some random person on /mu/ citing wikipedia articles.
>You are literally arguing with professionals
Yeah, getting flustered and throwing out another irrelevant statement and assumption definitely helps your argument.

>Sticking your fingers in your ears and yelling isn't a replacement for facts.
And neither is citing a Wikipedia article over and over again.

Is an article from Stanford enough for you, anon?

Or is it on the same level as Wikipedia? I mean you've already said you know more than university professors.

There's a lot of false statements in there so not really.
And a lot of is just hollow exposition.
Did you just google creo articles and hope some .edu link popped up?

OP, you have almost exclusively been listening to a specific subgenre of hip hop known as ignorant rap. Part of the appeal of these dudes persona is precisely that they sound all ebonical and shit.

All you have to do is listen to other subgenres of hip hop and you will see that many rappers are very articulate.
