Listened to this for the first time yesterday. If the singer didn't sound so gay it would actually be decent. I don't get why people get so worked up about them.
Dream Theater are a guilty pleasure, but their music is incredibly cheesy and completely lacking in self-awareness or nuance.

Alright OP, allow me to save you a bit of misunderstanding here on /mu/.
Dream Theater is a band with undeniable talent. Petrucci is a phenomenal guitarist, Portnoy is a great drummer (though I think they have a new one now), and etc.
The issue is, the lyrics are LARPy as fuck and the songwriting is average at best. If this sort of progressive meth appeals to you, try Opeth (start with Blackwater Park). Then you may feel properly patrician.

Awake is actually pretty great, if only for Kevin Moore's presence and the lack of ridiculous overproduction from Images and Words. Awake really lets feeling and occasionally a serious sense of despair come through, unlike basically any other sterile-ass DT release.
