What is their best album? I've only listened to Out of Time.
Murmur, Lifes Rich Pageant and Automatic for the People

Murmur or Automatic for the People are the most popular choices
New Adventures in Hi-Fi.
No one talks about this album and it makes me quite sad. It has some of their best ever work on it, and is one of the few albums I loved on the very first listen.
Features some more experimental, longer songs. Most songs were recorded on tour and touched up in the studio. It's a mix of their more acoustic stuff and some harder tunes. There are no standout "pop singles" like on Out of Time/Automatic, but plenty of brilliant songs that probably should have been hits.
It also sounds a teeny bit Radiohead-esque to me, which is probably attributed to the fact that it was written at the exact same time Michael Stipe befriended Thom Yorke and invited him on tour.

Murmur, followed by Reckoning.
Murmur, Life's Rich Pageant, and Document are their holy trinity.

Hugely underrated, absolutely.
But their best? Really?
Murmur by far is one of the best albums ever to grace this earth

Yeah.
Michael Stipe said it was his favourite too.

I personally like Murmur the best but Document and Automatic are great, too.

Murmur through Monster are all good.
Murmur is the meme answer. But if you actually like R.E.M., Reckoning and Fables of the Reconstruction are superior.
Automatic for the People is the best from their "mature" period, and a classic as well.

Murmur gets extra influence points, but Automatic For The People is them at their most mature, and has them playing to all of their strengths
