I like smoking weed during a sit-down-record-playthrough, just because it helps me focus on the music and not my iPhone or external stress... I can just sit down for an hour with weed and a record and take in every note and word
On a different note, I use drugs more than half the time when I am recording music. If I know I have an intense noise part I want to work on, then cocaine mixed with psychedelics, and speed. If there are spacey layers I want to put down, I'll see what sounds good to me on acid. If I'm doing vocals then there's no telling what the fuck I'm on— vocal sessions get much more intense drug-wise. Once the song is done I can go back to being sober and somewhat healthy again.
