What's the Kid A of this generation? An album from the 2010s that pushes boundaries and creates new genres or is its own sound?

These are all acceptable answers but I would say this or Strange Mercy for aggregating many popular alternative and indie rock and pop sounds. St. Vincent isn't creating a genre, but rather distilling the sounds of the past in an accessible manner.
>>
>>63870150
I don't think this generation's had a Kid A yet, even though a lot of great albums have come out. It's been a long time since I've heard a new album that really changed the game.
>>
>>63870657
how the hell did Kid A "change the game" and how have there not been albums in the past 6 years that haven't done that

I know I'll get shit on for saying this but Mt Eerie "pushed boundaries" of sound. Using static with silence for drum beats, Phil Elvrum's unusual singing with pauses and breaths, constantly changing tempo and sounds to keep the listener engaged and on their feet, elegant composition, experimental as fuck in general....I loved this album. I feel a lot of the same way about Person Pitch.

Damn, I actually feel the same way. Mount Eerie and Person Pitch are like two opposite sides of the same coin. Really when it comes down to it Mount Eerie is probably one of the two coolest album I've ever heard, along with Daydream Nation

Or you can ask what is the TLOP of the 2000's? An album so overhyped and awful it literally managed to ruin the artists career.
>>
>>63871057
While you speak in hyperbole (TLOP hasn't ruined Kanye's career), you are definitely right about it being overhyped and awful. It was just a shit album for Kanye's standards. Say what you want about Kanye, his albums are always very well-produced and polished. This album was a rushed disaster that he is probably still working on and updating. It has no good songs, only good moments and those are few (bam bam on Famous or chance's part on Ultralight Beam). Fuck TLOP

The thing about Kid A is that it isn't exactly "unique". And it isn't as experimental as a lot of people make it out to be.

Part of the reason it's ground breaking, though, is that it is very difficult to classify what genre it actually is. It's a mish-mash of IDM-influenced electronica and experimental rock music, with some jazz/classical/post-rock influenced stuff sprinkled in various places.

Kid A is what it sounds like when a rock band tries to become an "electronic band". Which is part of why it's great. Thom Yorke tried to rip-off Aphex Twin but ultimately fell short, and in the process made something more interesting. If it really was just a shameless IDM record, it would be shit.

Overall it's a pop album though. A lot of the songs are constructed in a rock format even if they use non-rock instrumentation, and Thom Yorke's vocals still dominate - often with strongly melodic hooks. So, while the band and the fans have always bigged it up as some kind of Metal Machine Music-esque album designed to alienate the music business, it is still highly accessible to anyone who is familiar with both OK Computer and 90s electronic music.

Also, it debuted at #1 on the US charts. Arguably it was a more popular album than OKC.

i liked the production on 30 Hours it has a good sense of melody and atmosphere contrasting the shitty stupid lyrics. No More Parties In LA is a half decent track. Ultralight Beams, strongest overall track on the album. Parts of Famous sound good. That's about it really. It's an album of filler sounds and half-baked rushed experiments similar to Yeezus but even worse. There's barely anything to it, it's just an overhyped overly anticipated album. The end.

IMO, this is the correct answer. But the 2010s are dominated by rap, so Ye, K. Dot, or Death Grips are much more fitting.
