What does /mu/ think of vaporwave?
>>
Vaporwave is D E A D
>>
>>63867460
Define it. What are the musical characteristics. Be as specific and detailed as you can be please! I have never understood what it means as a style of music and would like an enthusiast or professional to explain it to me fully.

why do other people need to tell you what it is?

listen to it yourself and figure it out, it's pretty easy to understand you simpleton

worst meme ever desu. I'm not sure how this meme genre became so big, I remember back when Macintosh Plus came out and barely anybody talked about it and now I see people with fuckin vaporwave cover photos and everybody talking about A E S T H E T I C S. fmsu senpai
>>
A friend showed me it in like 2010 i found it interesting that most of the recordings being slowed down were heavily midi sequenced.

It was at one point, it was practically half invented by mew. Now it's just overtaken by normies.

I like it.
Nostalgic aesthetic.
It spawned a bunch of subgenres (mallsoft being one of them).
I like memes so I like meme music.
>>
>>63867650
You know the music in the background of those 90s instructional VHS tapes on how to use the internet?

That.
>>
>>63872602
What subgenres has vaporwave spawned besides mallsoft, seapunk, and witch house?
>>
>>63872613
I dunno, but I'm sure there are some.
>>
>>63867460
I love it, but there is one problem. Because its really easy to make music that can be called Vapourwave theres so much shit out there, and it mixes in with the good stuff.

and hardvapor which is basically sample-based gabber with russian letters

Witch House and Seapunk actually came BEFORE vaporwave.

Ocean Grunge however is a subgenre of vaporwave

It has no strict musical rules per se. One can use any form of music but it is the strong aesthetic and common imagery that links vaporwave artists into one genre. This aesthetic is a one of shallow 80s consumerism, specifically focused on Japan which was a country that was a strong economic and cultural influence in this period. The aesthetic is not merely a presentation of these themes, but an exaggeration and distortion of them to give slightly uncanny feeling. It is supposed to be looking back at this dead period if history, with its abandoned malls, and feeling perturbed and nostalgic about all that was lost forever, in all its shallow disposability, much like the sampled songs themselves.

That is not to say it is without tropes. It generally, sounds like and samples cheesy 80s elevator soul/funk/smooth jazz with multiple layers of effects such as treble reducing, heavy use of effects that make the music faded and ethereal. In addition looping and chopping are common.
>>
>>63872962
Also, there are waves of vaporwave, the first being mostly based on plunderphonics, the second based on 80s advertisements and the third based on evoking a feel of nostalgia and eeriness using original music and samples. Since the MTV rebranding that's based on the seapunk and vaporvawe a e s t h e t i c s, it has entered the mainstream and became filled with emulations of the first and second waves of vaporwave, resulting in a rejection of the original principles of vaporwave, resulting in hardvapour, lead by non other than HKE (of 2814 fame), with the "vaporwave is dead" flag, probably caused by the fear that vapowave will become stagnant, and since it is a mostly experimental genre, it will become effectively dead
>>
love it
>>
i like it because they recycle old 80s and 90s shit and it has an amazing vibe to it
>>
>>63872902
>synthwave
>subgenre of vaporwave
how retarded do you have to be to think that a 30 year old genre can be derived from a millenial trend?
>>
>>63873020
>>63872962

great insights, I will add that vaporwave is in my opinion more than just a genre, and in all probability will be the defining art movement of our generation.
Those who grew up in the 80´s/90´s grew up in a world where everybody believed capitalism will buy everyone happiness over time. Now we are older and realize that these were all empty ideals wich are symbolized by the core vaporwave aesthetic, the empty mall.
I hope that vaporwave will not collapse on itself and manages to stay out of the mainstream for a while so that it may transform to a vast art form.
>>
>>63873077
>everybody
shit no dude, did you miss out on all the counterculture from that time? I mean sure communism was basically a joke then but capitalism sure as hell wasn't seen as a panacea by the general public.
>>
>>63873077
I must add that vaporwave is also not dependent on this subjective interpretation of its philosophy, the great strength of vaporwave is ofcourse its aesthetics. Thats why vaporwave will not only save music, but also visual art and film.
>>
>>63873020
>>63873077

unironic 80s/90s aesthetics >>>>> ironic 80s/90s aesthetics.
>>
>>63873075
Synthwave is a microgenre that takes the aesthetics from synthpop, the one you're talking about, and it is a 10s trend, and it takes ideas and concepts from vaporwave. Know your shit or kill yourself, senpai
>>
>>63873095
yeah I missed out, because I was too young to understand. I mean I listened to nirvana and all this other alternative stuff, but had no idea what the songs were saying. I got conscious about the world in the early 2000s.
When I think of the 90s we just wanted to get these dank ass videogames and explore the old internet, our parents constantly telling us that we can be everything we want to be.
>>
>>63873143
Dude, synthwave was already a word back in the 80s. You just read the inaccurate wikipedia entry and called it a day.

Dude, synthwave revivalism started in the mid-2000s, before witch house (which preceded vaporwave) was even a thing, it's a separate trend.
>>
>>63873109
Think of all the movies influenced by 80s aesthetics just from the past year, Turbo Kid, Kung Fury, Mad Max: Fury Road, and so on. The vapor is saving mainstream art already
>>
>>63873244
I'll accept that. But you can't deny that it's taking ideas from vaporwave and future funk right now

>>
>>63873289
That's why I said 'the vapor' and not vaporwave. I can't help but relate vapor to the 80s revivalism, maybe because we're trying to do the 80s right this time? As if we're just taking the spirit of that decade and not it's values, we're just breathing the vapor

Most people who rip on this kind of music never take the time to find something they like. They just listen to the first two songs from floral shoppe and dismiss it as a meme. Theres plenty of better stuff out there...

One example of a quality vaporwave album would be Virtual Dream Plaza. Colossal ambient album over 16 hours long, which just blew me away. I have been listening to songs off it for a long time now and its just simply breathtaking.

https://telepathtelepath.bandcamp.com/album/--32

I think a lot of people have issues with the name "vaporwave" and just dismiss it as a silly post ironic meme, when in reality its just like every other genre with no black and white definition of what fits inside it.

For me it has a very emotional quality, I was born in 1992 so I was basically raised by the internet. Now that im an "adult" vaporwave has a very sorrowful nostalgic sound that I really enjoy.
>>
>>63874827
I can give you that, since vaporwave is so wide-ranging. I really think Mana Pool just accomplishes the goal of vaporwave really well. Pure vibe

keep the thread alive.

I felt the same when a friend told me about vaporwave around 2012, I looked it up once and then dismissed it as some sample based meme, but now I suddenly all these great new albums are coming out and it appears vaporwave is here to stay.
Along with the music the aesthetic is also becoming less ironic and altogether the vibe is just getting a lot more sophisticated.

agreed. It sucks though because honestly a lot of times they really do just wanna hear the song they've heard 30 times a week. THE ACTUAL SOURCE OF VAPORWAVE IS "EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE"

It's a site that archives all kinds of weird and quaint VHS videos from the early 90s.

in the late 2000s they released two feature-length films, the latter having a strong occult vibe to it, which probably inspired Witch House a lot (not sure how much). But the former ended with a very lengthy and silly instructional video about the internet.

That shit was all over livestream in the late 2000s, right when he youtube poop format was at its height, and I'm 100% sure that this is what inspired Eccojams and the first vaporwave projects.

I take all the criticism and all the hate on board. But I fucking love it and I can't explain why.
>>
ECO VIRTUAL - Atmospheres 2 is a masterpiece
>>
>>63878644
I also thought DXM and robotripping had a heavy tine in to vaporwave.

ITT: Comfy af vidya songs that evoke the feeling of being in an elementary school computer lab, and may deserve a Vaporwave remix of some kind.

Vaporwave has just morphed back into Ambient Music

nothing wrong with that though

Fuck off HKE
>>
>>63867650
IMO Vaporwave is a sampling subgenre.

I dont even like HKE by itself but 2814 is fucking amazing

Imo what separates Vaporwave from all the things people claim it "ripped off" or "derives from" is the aesthetic. And I think it's pretty new an idea to have a music that exists on the aesthetic level more prominently than the sonic level.

What I find more interesting is the aesthetic seems to alter how I listen to the music. I can't imagine some of the Vaporwave albums without their front covers imprinted in my mind as I listen. It's an interesting experiment on how aesthetic can warp music.

>>63878413
it was normie since macintosh plus and 4chan killed it imo
>>
>>63879480
It's not normie, it's post-romanticist
>>
>>63867460
It makes me feel like I'm walking around a toys r us in 1997 while feeling sad.

You mean tumblrwave? :^)
>>
>>63879287
>>63879277
I don't get the appeal of it
It's just random noises and bland atmospheric music with no insturments

If you think there aren't any instruments then you're deaf

This may sound odd but does anybody want to die in vaporwave? Everytime I view vaporwave art I feel a warm desire to die. Anybody else share this feel?
>>
Loved it but it has been outplayed and is now being transformed into meme rap by niggers. Honestly.
>>
>>63883775
does it feel good? its called nostalgia
you are actually longing for the time before you were born, when everything was a chillwave this is essential to vaporwave, the emptyness, non/existence wich is symbolized through the empty mall.

>you are actually longing for the time before you were born
personally vaporwave embodies the tone and atmosphere of the first ten years of my life

I like it because it reminds me of walking around shopping malls with my parents and watching late 80's/early-mid 90's toy commercials, only aware of the sights and sounds around me with none of the context
>>
>>63873323
>>63873323
lmao what are you talking about man
>>
>>63873544
that's not quite correct either

obviously albums were uploaded to bandcamp and the aesthetic imagery independently got big on tumblr but MUCH of the initial music discussion took place on here and reddit.

I think I like vaporwave but everytime I can instantly recognize the sample I'm just reminded i'm listening to a different song so maybe I actually don't like it. Thanks for reminding me Yellow Magic Orchestra exists though.
>>

HARDVAPOUR KILLED IT
>>
>>63867834

that's basically "chopped and screwed"

>>63867650

sloppy, almost satirical, production is it's main gimmick. Think "cheep" sounding.

>>63872962

I would argue that the 80s motif is not a characteristic of the genre. In vaporwave I see commentary on the internet, and also on the manufactured interactions and sensations found in modern America.
