I don't really get what glam rock is. It seems like just rock played by people in weird clothes.

You're halfway right, but glam rock was more or less a return to the jangly rock before psychedelia and folk took over, so when it came around that, coupled with the performance aspect of the artists, shaped it into a distinct scene.
Glam also tends to hearken back to early pop rock by often featuring an orchestral backing to make it sound distinct from your general rock and roll.

It's ultra simple, straightforward pop/rock music with an emphasis on foot-tapping rhythms using fuzz guitars and occasional string arrangements. Throw in some silliness and a tad of femininity and you've got Glam Rock.
