op here. made this thread not because i don't think he's good, i like a lot of his music. im just wondering who put that stick up his ass and why does he hate branca and dead nigger guy so much?
>>
>>63867012
>branca
Probably because Glenn never made anything good.
>dead nigger
Because Julius Eastman "interpreted" a piece that instructed the person to "give a lecture" as him pulling down a guy's pants and gesturing at genitals for like what 40 minutes
>>
>>63867351
oh ok thanks for answering

this is a great mix of john cage stuff for anyone looking to see what the dude was about

Here's an interesting video about Cage talking about him
>>
>>63868367
Apparently the piece he was discussing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xt0LTPe1zs

Why isn't this the memed Branca shit? This is actually good.
>>
>>63868367
>>63868535
Yeah John Cage pretty much just said "He's really not great."
>>
>>63866615
whether he's a good or bad composer is essentially irrelevant to whether his ideas are interesting or relevant, which i and many others think are.
>>
>>63868696
I think they are, but most of his pieces aren't really worth listening to outside of a live concert.
>>
>>63868367
http://www.ubu.com/sound/chicago82.html
peak of the sacred

>>63868635
no he didnt
he pretty clearly says that if the relation between the composer and the musician is a model for social relations, then he has a problem with it as a model for real social relations as it allows the player no freedom - real, creative freedom ad self actualization
but im only 10mmin in
he also says hes giving a lot of time to thinking about it
then he further goes on, acknowledging his misperception of the piece not being a written score, that he has a preference for music that is not based around he composer.

>And I don't think...Branca is a step ahead of anything. [laughs] He might be popular for the moment, but popular is nothing.
>>
>>63868980
you're editing out cage's interest in freedom and anarchy just before the bit you chose to quote
you really missed the best bits
but you do hit on cage's perception of branca as 'rock star' and guru which he clearly finds distasteful with his disinterest in ego
the real shit is at +/- 16 min to the end.
ill let you find it yourself.
very interesting tho
>>
>>63865173
He's just doing his thing man, don't be a dick.
>>
>>63869233
I listened to all of it, he was unimpressed with Branca in addition to being ideologically opposed to his music. You cannot deny that he said Branca isn't particularly innovative or new.
>>
>>63869353
you cant deny he compared it to wagner and thus it struck him with overtones of fascism. thus its old news to him.
and climax climax climax is antithetical to his core aesthetics.
is/was branca innovative ?
i dont see an 'unimpressed' vibe or an 'oh hes just not very good' vibe
but clearly cage had a number of misconceptions about the performance.
>>
>>63869353
and i think ideology is too loaded a word
but whatever
cage dropped 'fascism' so i guess you can drop ideology
>>
>>63869492
>i dont see an 'unimpressed' vibe or an 'oh hes just not very good' vibe

>why does he hate Branca
nigga whut

I know the interview you're referring to, but he said he didn't like the political implications Branca's music suggested to him. You have to remember Cage was a really sensitive, contemplative guy with really strange attitudes towards music and when factoring in the emotional character from which a lot of Branca's music is composed, Cage was pretty dead on with his analysis.

Yes

No. He's like seventy. This is the guy that mentored Michael Gira.
>>
>>63870026
lol i know who he is
actually just listened to peak a few days ago, i know who the performers were

legit not sure if id call it innovative
>>
>>63870980
Why?
>>
>>63871015

>>
>>63871166

>>
>>63871265
no, you are wrong
>>
>>63871166
>>63871265
>>63871284
unless either of you want to say why branca is or isn't innovative then you have no grounds to agree or disagree with cage's statement
>>
>>63865173
He thought all sound was music.

He was right.
>>
>>63871363
stay out of this, kid
you might get hurt
>>
>>63871363
To innovate you need solid knowledge of what has already been done.

ie. a music degree at the very least. Unless you have a masters degree in composition, you're probably not innovating. Innovating would be stockhausen in the 50s and 60s. Innovating would be Gesualdo's chromaticism in the 16th century. Innovating would be Stravinsky's le sacre in 1912, or Wagner Tristan und Isolde. Innovating would be Schoenberg's 5 pieces for orchestra.

Most popular musicians don't innovate. they *think* they're innovating, and the *try* to innovate, but usually nothing new is created.

Creating an entire new period of music like Late Beethoven, or Wager or Schoenberg. Thats innovation. when your idea changes music completely for 50+ years, you know it was innovative.
>>
>>63871440
i have no real knowledge myself, i just felt liking getting this argument to a rational place

i'd like to know what similarities you see to other works in branca's works though, to the extent that he hasn't done anything significantly different from what's been done in the past

again not an attack or a disagreement, i'm just curious
>>
>>63871480
>i just felt liking getting this argument to a rational place
the universe is against you
rubbing vigorously
>>
>>63871740
i'm aware and i'm alright with that

i'm happy if even one argument here that would have or already did go south gets turned around because i interjected

it's all i have left to do here tbqh, nothing else interests me anymore
>>
>>63871480
Eh I'm not going to waste my time listening to some random anon and showing how or how he isn't innovative. Unless its art music, I'm not interested.
>>

occam's razor
>>
>>63871767
well then i don't see the point in voicing your agreement with cage at all, or disagreeing with the other guy

sorry to be wasting your time, i just don't see the point in joining the conversation if it was your intention not to contribute meaningfully, especially when you seem like someone who really could do just that

Mental Floss actually had a really cool article on 4'33" and his philosophy behind it. If also goes a but into his view of what music is

hes also a faggot for implying branca isnt art music
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5Aflvdl6cI&nohtml5=False

I'm sorry, but this isn't art/classical/erudite/whatever music; it's rock
Not that it isn't pretty damn good, but John Cage seems to me like another deal
>>
>>63872250
yeah
art rock music
you think rock cant be art?
lol faggot
>>
>>63872270
i'm not him, but please define "art rock"

and art, while you're at it

i think what the other guy was saying is that his music isn't steeped in theory or philosophy, unlike music that fits into the older tradition of "art music"
>>

that's what it looks like on the surface
>>
>>63872250
>>63872270

Reminder that The Ascension wasn't written for a symphony orchestra. It's literally recorded by a rock band and you chose one of the only items in Branca's catalogue that could be classified as 'rock'.

art rock isn't art music.

"art music" is just a label for what you all call "classical"

all music is technically art (although the term means little after duchamp), but only classical is "art music" Its made by trained composers, on written scores, and played in concert halls by live performers. If you tick all three of those boxes, you're on your way to creating art music.
>>
>>63872956
enjoy your dusty dictionary faggot

what classical are you listening to then anon?

I'm a Bach man myself. sometimes renaissance, sometimes 20th century. But I always come back to baroque
