Why does /mu/ worship this man's ambient tape cassettes (Jarvid 9, Monopoly Child Star Searchers, etc.) if they're just rip-offs/sampled of obscure new age tapes from the 1980s?

You say that as if it changes anything. 99% of the dude's early sound comes from the processing. What you're listening to is the echo between broken ghetto blasters, reverberation from buckets of hair gel, downsampled mud of reversed handheld tape recorders, etc. It's like I Am Sitting In A Room from another dimension. The actual source of the sound is arbitrary

Also almost all of Spencer Clark's stuff is made from scratch

It means people respect him from a production stand point not as a musician.

Even though NYC Hell, Sushi, Cold, Suki Girlz, and pretty much everything else he has released recently are fantastic albums in their own right.

Marcel never said anything bad about James Ferraro though??? He never claimed he was stealing?? He loves Ferraro more than any human being. Why do you keep getting your stories messed up. If anything, Marcel would probably 100% agree with that trip's post.
>>
>>63866949
you do know what "framework" means, right? like I said before, sampling was just one of the elements to his early sound
>>
>>63867008
OP wasn't fucking quoting Marcel he was quoting the musician who commented on Marcel's tweet holy shit how are you people not getting this

that guy is saying the same thing: how he "jammed" over loops of these tapes

yeah but it was weird to bring it up because it seemed like that anon was implying that Marcel called Ferraro a hack, which couldn't be farther from the truth. his comment didn't make any sense.
>>
>>63867093
but marcel never bad-mouthed ferraro

all the instruments and the vocals are his. there are a few fx samples throughout, I think

>>
>>63867306
I don't think any of this is sampled besides brief snippets of commercials and shit. All of the instrumentals are completely original and James did all of the singing and guitar playing.
>>
>>63867216
it sounds like average new age music
early ferraro drew inspiration from new age music
what's the problem here?
>>
>>63867167
It's the Clock Tower Acid album. I guess he tried to do some kind of "collage" with existing songs and his own experiments. The "sample" is Oxygene by Harry Vander.

>>63867435
I meant Jean-Michel Jarre. Shit, I'm tired.
>>
>>63867399
no it doesn't sound like "average new music" AT ALL. it sounds exactly like the Jarvid 9 albums.

look up other new age from the early 80s, this tape sounds unlike anything else. it's a one of a kind.

just try to find me something that sounds remotely like this cassette.

>tribute albums generally don't interest me. this just makes me wanna listen to rifts.
>marcel messaged me to rate this and i thought it could use a review as well. he claims to be inspired by early oneohtrix point never but i think the *idea* or his *perception* of the music interests him more.
>foley seems content to stick to glowy juno-esque sounds droning and arpeggiating, coated in cassette tape hiss. while that's part of what makes something like rifts interesting, it's also not what rifts is about.
>for one thing, rifts is a lot more layered, as shown in something like "melancholy depictions of 3d objects", where childish vocal samples are stretched and manipulated over xylophone sounding synth arpeggios, or "a pact between strangers", where faux-natural, youtube ripped and sp-404 arranged samples lend eerie atmosphere to point never's bass-led, vangelis inspired imaginings.
>rifts is also, to me, partially about the dynamics of short, miasmic pieces like "eyeballs" and gradually building and then spiraling out ones like "physical memory", as well as the explosiveness and ecstasy of short songs like "hyperdawn" and "betrayed in the octagon". the songs on this tape lack those dynamics, they're pretty meandering but not long enough to make that meandering into something odd or fascinating.
>i think of the way james ferraro's early music just sort of meanders/noodles along for 20 minutes. this doesn't display the same patience to stick with one idea.
>finally, there's nothing gut-wrenchingly emotional about this release that justifies the simple, meandering tracks. there's not a single "when i get back from new york" to justify 19 "computer vision" or "lovergirls precinct" type of tracks.
>it's just kinda meh. like i said, foley finds something like "rifts" fascinating and borrows the surface ideas w/out looking deeper. this isn't a reaction to rifts, it's just a restatement of its most obvious ideas.
What did he mean by this?

The song is Leather High School. It's on Night Dolls With Hairspray.

The whole album is great. Kinda in the middle of his music career, after the side-long ambient/new age pieces, and before the freaky-weird R&B stuff he does now.

>Suitcase I is both a lazy, lackluster ambient EP and a poorly made drone EP. Each of these 'tracks' (loops) consist of five or so seconds of music repeated until the track is close enough to the four minute mark to look substantial. The looping itself sounds like it was done in audacity - pops or clicks at the end of this loop destroy the atmosphere and flow of every single track.
>The atmosphere conveyed by every song but the first can be summed up with

>a) shit stars of the lid
>b) flagrant abuse of audacity's reverb feature

>(pick your favourite)

>The music is clearly influenced by groups and people like (or similar to) Stars of The Lid, Tim Hecker, AWVFTS - it has the overwhelming and nostalgic atmosphere that often characterizes music from these projects. Marcel fundamentally misunderstands WHY these musicians are great, or how to imitate them. When it comes to ambient atmosphere is everything and an atmosphere that is interrupted by crackles every five seconds from poor mastering is not engaging, an atmosphere that loops until it sounds like it could be a bizarre dance song is not nostalgic and it doesn't matter how much fucking reverb you slap on or how pretentious you make the song titles. The music is not good.

So if I sample something and distort it beyond recognition and flip it and swap frequencies and put a comb filter on it and dissect it down to milliseconds and time stretch it and retrigger bits and pieces of it to the point where it's not longer recognizable, am I a thief, or have I performed art?

All sample based music is hack work.

Sampling is what you do when you're too lazy to create something from the ground up.

Five favorite ever?

1. Queen
2. David Bowie
3. Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti (the early material is fucking tops)
4. Robbie Basho
5. Tangerine Dream

Hadn't really thought too much about the last two. 4 is because I'd say that's accurate to how I'd personally rate it. 5 is because I have been obsessed with the Berlin School of electronic music recently.

I really want to know how he produced that early stuff. Him and Ariel Pink. AP's early stuff is lo-fi, but it doesn't have that sort-of "boxed-in" sound that tape-recorded/lo-fi stuff sometimes has.

No prob!

It's the first track, around 6:10.
>>
>>63868160
You can use both. When I feel like fucking around with lofi I just make some super cheesy new age ambient in my DAW, then toss it through a wonky 4-track I got laying around. There's a lot of techniques he uses that I've picked up, like bouncing between certain mic set ups, fucking around with line input so your preamp starts clipping, feeding individual tracks through the tape deck certain ways, etc. but unless you want to directly sound like him I'd try to find your own tricks. I've listed out the gear he uses a few times, but really the only essential tools are cheap digital keyboards and a 4-track
